Editor's Note: Congregation Shaarey Zedek will observe its
90th anniversary with the following .events: Art exhibit,
which began Thursday, at the Art Institute; Thanksgiving
morning service, to be addressed by Dr. Henry Hitt Crane;
Sabbath morning service, Nov. 24, Rabbi Morris Adler's sermon
topic being "A Backward Glance and a Forward Look"; Men's
Club and Sisterhood event Saturday night, Nov. 24, with presen-
tation of cantata,`"The Lord's Song"; religious school cele-
bration, Nov. 25; anniversary banquet, SUnday, Nov. 25, Dr.
Simon S. Greenberg, vice-chancellor of Jewish Theological
Seminary, guest speaker.

' synagogue at Eisenstadt, dated
1690, with the name of Rabbi
Mair Ben Isaac. It once be-
longed to Sampson • Wertheimer,
Chief Rabbi of Austria, a famous
Court Jew. This ring, having
the inscription "With Permis-
sion of His Highness," was ex-
hibited at the Brooklyn Muse-
UM.
The oldest item in the exhibit
is a Hebrew manuscript of sev-
eral books of Holy Stories, dated
1325, signed by the Scribe. The
fly leaf has dated records of
sales of transfer of ownership.
The book is one of several items
on loan from the collection of
Charles Feinberg.
There are beautiful large pairs
of silver Sabbath candlesticks, a
set of six large silver Mezzuzas
(Polish, 1700), a 17th century
breastplate (Torah coveioing),
and other fine pieces, too num-
erous to mention.
'An important feature of the
exhibit is the catalogue com-
piled by Dr. Stephen S. Kayser,
with a preface by Dr. Edgar P.
Richardson, director of the De-
troit Art Institute, containing
28 photographs and descriptions
of the articles shown. This cata-
logue is an important addition
to any library.
This is the first opportunity
Detroit has to see so important
a collection of Jewish cere-
monial art. 'The exhibit's his-
torical significance is as great
as its artistic value.
We feel that the schools of
our community should not miss
the educational importance of
this show.

More than 200 art pieces, in-
cluding BO loaned by the Jewish
Museum of New York, are in-
cluded in the collection of Jew-
ish ceremonial objects on ex-
hibit at the Art Institute in
honor of Shaarey Zedek's 90th
anniversary. The Detroit Art
Commission is co-sponsor of the
exhibition with Shaarey Zedek
The exhibit offers an unusual
opportunity to view the collec-
tion of silver objects gathered
from many countries, including
Israel; Africa, India and Euro-
pean countries. Each selection
represents a particular era in
Jewish history, Jewish cere-
monial art being basically east-
ern, influenced by the countries
in which the artisans produced
them. -
An elaborately wrought set of
Pa duan 18th century silver
Torah Crowns and Rimonim is
on loan by Temple Israel. An
embroidered Ark curtain, used
on the occasion of a circum-
cision in the synagoglie, and in-
tricately woven silver belt worn
by Kohanim on Holy Days, are
two of the unusual beautiful
articles from the Jewish Mu-
seum collection. Detroit art col-
lector Henry Meyers has loaned
a 19th century silver Menorah
for oil burning, an object of rare
design and craftsmanship.
In the collection is a wedding
ring, shaped in the form of the
