started, where and when will it
finish?

By YOHANAN RAMATI

(Copyright. 1951. Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)

(Mr. Ramati, one of Israel's best known journalists, describes life on the Israel
frontier and suggests how the midnight raids and provocations of hostile Arabs
can be overcome. American readers will see that the United Jewish Appeal has
an especially vital role to play in this matter—on which so much depends if Israel
is to achieve a lasting peace with its neighbors.)

Funds from the UJA have al-
ready—as it by magic—convert-
ed the tents in which the im-
migrants used to live into tin
shacks, which at kast keep the

without a scratch. He is still
cheerful, a well-knit, good look-
' ing fellow spreading the spirit of•
comradeship all about him. Six
months ago, he joined the kib-
butz of Belt Gowin, a lonely
outpost at the foot of the Heb-
ron hills. The kibbutz had one
lorty. Mark was its driver.
He tells the story of what
happened quite unabashed:
"Just about a month after I
_ got here—that would be five
months back—I was driving 23
of our boys and girls to Tel
Aviv. But we never got there.
Just about three miles back
along the road you came—it
2 „/„. was not finished then — we
' struck a mine. I just passed
out, naturally. When I came
to, I was on my way to the
hospital with my legs broken
in 18 different places. I
learned later though that we
were all rather lucky. The
weight of thP 23 boys and
girls at the back " prevented
the truck from turning over;
and they got off with only a
bit of a fright. I was the only
casualty."
He laughs happily. This seems
a little queer, but the explana-
tion is not long in coming:
"They took me to the Wallach
Hospital in Jerusalem. I was
there six weeks, with my legs
swathed in plaster. The nurse
who attended me came from
Paris. We talked French, and
liked each other from the be-
ginning. By the time I left we
were engaged."
Mines have been laid, along
the roads leading to Beit Govrin
with terrible regularity during
the last few months. By night,
the Arabs come and steal what
they can from the kibbutz,
sometimes even penetrating the
barbed wire compound. Of the
90 boys and girls here, one-third
are on guard duty every week.
No, it is not very safe in Beit
Govrin. And the Army,. the
Agency and members of the kib-
butz are agreed that there is
only one cure for the situation.
More is at stake than the fate
of an isolated settlement. The
whole border from Hartuv
southw- ardS to the Negev needs
