Life of Prof. Albert Schatz Reads:
Farming to Science to Farming

In a copyrighted Seven. Arts
Feature article, Tina Levitan
tells the 'story of Prof. Albert
Schatz, one of today's outstand-
ing Jewish scientists.
A true New Englander, born at
Norwich, - Conn., who scorns the
crowds and hustle bustle of New
York City life, Prof. Schatz was
co-discoverer of one of the most
effective of the so-called "won-
der drugs," streptomycin.
The 31 - year - old scholar,
whose father, Julius Schatz, was
a Russian immigrant, at the age
of four showed intense interest in
every kind of plant life. While his
father worked in the construc-
tion line, young Albert cherished
visits to his grandparents' farm
in up-state Connecticut where
he developed his love for nature.
His family moved to Passaic,
N.J. to give Albert the benefit of
a good elementary and high
school education, and they were
not surprised to see their son
enroll in Rutgers University's
College of Agriculture. Here, he
was elected to Phi Beta Kappa,
and was the only member of his
class to be accepted into Sigma
Xi, highest honorary fraternity
in the scientific field.
Young Schatz enlisted in the
Army Air Corps after gradua-
tion and was assigned to the
medical and sanitary bacteri-
ology detachment. He saw that
tuberculosis, cholera, coliti s,
genito-urinary tract infections
were caused by what medical
science termed "the gram nega-
tive• bacteria." Thus began a
search for the drug that would
accomplish what penicillin and
sulphur drugs failed to cure.
He re-entered Rutgers after
his discharge to try to find other
clues to the problem. In his col-
lege courses he learned that the
soil supplies the growth of mil-
lions of microscopic plants. He
tested endless numbers which
would destroy germs in the body
without killing body tissue.
In a complicated growth
called steptomyces griseus he
found what he had been looking
for. He traced how streptomycin
acts, why it inhibits bacteria,
how it is produced and how to
produce maximum amounts
cheaply.
In 1944 his discovery was an-
nounced in a professional jour-
nal, and in 1945 he was awarded
a PhD degree by the university
for his research thesis on Strep-
tomycin.
Prof. Schatz now teaches bio-

he still looks forward to aban-

His first love, however, is still
the soil, and with his wife, Vi-

The 1951 campaign of the
United Jewish Appeal has be-
come the keystone of freedom
for Israel and for hundreds of
thousands of homeless Jews who
must be transferred to the Jew-
ish state now. These Jews face
urgent emigration deadlines in
Iraq, Iran, Romania, Libya and
other lands of distress in East-
ern Europe and North Africa.
Israel itself, seeking to give new
opportunities to hundreds of
thousands of new immigrants
from lands of distress must be
helped now before the world
crisis forces a curtailment of as-
sistance. To meet the needs of
the United Palestine Appeal,
Joint Distribution Committee
and United Service for New
Americans, the VJA requires a
minimum of $203,684,577.
A 16-year-old mother and her
daughter are shown here in their
squalid home in the ghetto of
Tunis, from which they must be
rescued now.
