To Film Stardom

HOLLYWOOD — Danny Kaye
never took a dancing lesson,
can't read a note of music and
never has told jokes, yet he has
become famous as a singing,
dancing comedian.
He playS two roles in "On the
Riviera," his latest picture, and
has more girls falling in love
with him than the Clark Gables
and the Tyrone Powers have in
a dozen films.
He started out working as an
insurance adjustor and was
fired when he caused the com-
pany to lose $40,000 on a mis-
take he made.
He once taught President
Roosevelt, who was one of his
greatest admirers, to bark like a
dog. As an actor, he set out to
sing like Bing Crosby, who was
his lrc at the time. but he did
not sound enough like Bing to
get anyone interested in his
voice. He rattled off the names
of 50- foreign composers in less
than a minute in a song he did
for "Lady in The Dark," and the
song convulsed Broadway audi-
ences cc much that he zoomed
to stardom overnight.
He became the idol of Eng-
land v., hen he visited London
last year. Thousands stood in
line all night long to get in to
see his zany antics. And in
Toronto several weeks ago 340,-
000 turned out at a fair to see
him. He had only $=10 . to his
name at his wedding to Sylvia
Fine 10 years ago. He is run-
ning out of imitations and will
have to imitate a fellow named
Danny Kaye in his new film at
20th Century Fox.

NOTE: An American memorial to

scheduled to rise on Riverside Drive in
Manhattan. It will feature an 80-foot
tower of Tablets, and a 100-root long
wail to extend from the base of the
tower will portray in bas relief the
struggle of humanity to fulfill the com-
mandments urged on by an imposing
figure of Moses. The monument is to
cost $500,000 and the funds will be
