The list of deeds is near end-
less, but one thing is certain:
Rich and poor, Jew and
non-Jew, young and old, sol-
dier and civilian—from 111
America came contribu-
tions which ar , & main hope
of distressed and homeless
Jews for the start of new and
meaningful lives.

contributions of
$2 to $5 for
many months as the "Lord's

Tithe" to a worthwhile cause.
From Fox'tone County in
Arkansas came a S25 gift, sent
by a woman who offered part
of her home to Jewish dis-
placed persons coming to the
United States, as a place
where they could live and
work.
Isolated cases? Hardly. Thou-
sands of similar letters and con-
tributions from the compassion-
ate heart of America document-
ed in the files of the national
headquarters of the U ni t e d
Jewish Appeal make Gerald
Smith and the hate - mongers
run for cover. For the gifts
which flood the UJA — often
small, but always meaningful—
know not the slightest barriers
of race or creed.
Here are but a handful of a
stack of contributions which
UJA no longer considers "un-
usual." Most of the givers would
turn slightly crimson were their
names to appear next to their
deeds. But then, names are
hardly necessary. Their
thoughtful deeds tell the story.
Deeds like the

series of $250 and $100 gifts.
Jewish and non-Jewish fight-
ing men are among contributors
to the UJA, ranging from the
Spanish - American to the Ko-
rean war.
The Spanish-American war
veteran wrote in a sometimes
faltering hand:
"To God, my joyful thanks for
enabling me to contribute to the
UJA. This, my small and hum-
ble donation, is to the sacred
memory of those who fought,
suffered, bled and died for the
freedom of Israel in the Holy
Land."

A Jewish army corporal fight-
ing in Korea sent $30 to the UJA
with a note that "it is impera-
tive that Israel strengthen her-
self in a most expedient man-
ner."
Literally the smallest giver
known to the UJA was 5-year-
old Jack C., "who saved five pen-
nies from his meager allowance
and turned it over to his moth-
er "to send to the kids in
Israel."
One of the younger genera-
tion who has been really ardent
in her aid is 12-year-old Ruth
C., of Elizabeth, N. J. Ruth cro-
cheted tiny wood dolls all dur-
ing her summer holidays from
school and sold them to friends
and neighbors. She sent the
proceeds of $32.68 to the UJA
with a note expressing deep re-
grets that she had not been able
to reach her self-set original
goal of $36.50 for the year.
