example, to know that R
Hashanah alone is unexplain-
ed in the Bible? No reason is
given as to why the festival
is celebrated- on the first and
second days of Tishri (sev-
enth month.) It is to the later-
day sages, the rabbis and the
teachers that we owe today's
picture of Rosh Hashanah as
the traditional "yom haddin,"
the Day of Judgment, on
which all mortals pass in re-
view to give an account of
their deeds. The familiar "L'-
Shanah tovah," (for a good
year), with which Jews today
greet each other during this
season of the year, is in keep-
ing with the notion that the
destinies of men are written
or erased from the Book of
Life.

Everything about Rosh Hash-
annah, in fact, has evolved from
tradition, practice and teaching.
During the Babylonian exile
Jews adopted the custom of
marking a new year in the
spring month of Nisan, as well
as on the first of Tishri. During
the time of the Second Temple,
Israelites celebrated as many as
four new years!

Because Rosh Hashanah is
traditionally Judgment Day, it
has come to be regarded as
the most personal of all cele-
brations—a day on which the
creatures of God search their
own hearts and souls. Sig-
nificantly, the Zodiacal sign
for Tishri is Libra—the bal-
ance — a further intimation
that all deeds of mankind are
weighed in the balance.

Biblically speaking, the first
of Tishri has been a day of won-
drous incidents in Jewish his-
tory. This, plus the fact that it
heralded the time of the harvest,
are considered the most likely
reasons for the celebration of
Rosh Hashanah on that day.
Probably, of uppermost import-
ance is the traditional belief
that the world was created on
Rosh Hashanah. One of Israel's
most esteemed rabbis, Eliezer,
taught that on the first of Tish-
ri Joseph left prison. On this
same day, the Jews who were re-
turned from exile in Babylonia
brought their first offerings to
the newly-erected altar, and on
the first of Tishri the prophet
Ezra made his important and
impressiVe reading of the Torah
at the assembly of the people.
The solemn mood of Rosh
Hashanah as we know it today
1.s a phase of the celebration
which came into being after the
exile. In the pre-exile period,
the new year was essentially a
recognition of a new harvest
year. But in the post-exile pe-
riod, the festival has taken on
the characteristics of atonement
and expiation which have be-
come stronger through the years
as a sacred introduction to the
day of Atonement.
