Screen's 'David and Bathsheba' Is
Too Torrid for N.Y. Orthodox Groups

NEW YORK, (AJP)—Two na-
tional Orthodox Jewish groups
have rejected advertisements on
the technicolor film "David and
Bathsheba" for their publica-
tions, one on the grounds that
the film is "too sexy."
Twentieth-Centry Fox offices
have set up a special cam-
paign to win cooperation of Jew-
ish groups in promoting the
movie. The rejections of the ad-
vertisements by Young Israel,
a national youth group, and the
Union of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations representing more
than 500 synagogues, were the
first rebuffs in the film colony's
campaign.
Rabbi Irwin Gordon, executive
director of the UOJC, told the
AJP that the advertisement for
"Orthodox Jewish Life," the
UOJC publication, had been re-
jected because it was felt the
picture was "too sexy."
A critical review of the film
by Rabbi Shubert Spero of the
organization is scheduled to ap-
pear in the magazine's next is-
sue. Rabbi Gordon said.

Intimate Associate
Says Einstein Is
Behind in Physics

A half-page advertisement for
the "Young Israel Viewpoint"
was turned down "on principle,"
a young Israel spokesman told
the AJP.
A young Israel spokesman said
that his organization felt the
Bible should not be used as a
vehicle for film stories. adding
that strong objections had been
voiced to the story of David be-
ing transformed into a "love
movie."
The Young Israel spokesman
said the group also felt that
too much time and effort was
going into, portrayals of Jewish
historical and religimis figures
which emphasized their faults.
Neither organization had any
plans for a boycott of the film.
The Young Israel spokesman
said that many members pro-
bably had seen the movie but
that there was no reason for
the organization to officially
urge them to do so.
The film had come under cri-
tical Jewish security when it
was first released here. Several
Jewish organizations indicated
that the portrayal of God in the
film was likely to reinforce anti-
J e wish religious stereotypes.
These organizations, however,
declined to take any specific
action.

DENVER, (AJP) — A Jeru-
salem mathematician asserted
that Prof. Albert Einstein has
failed to keep pace with atomic
developments and said he
doubted t h e Jewish scientist
tipped off President Roosevelt
about the possibility of an
atomic bomb.
T h e mathematician, P r o f.
Abraham H. Fraenkel, of the
Hebrew University, charged in
an interview with Robert Gam-
zey, editor of the Intermoun-
tain Jewish News, that Einstein
had not kept pace with .modern
trends in the last 25 years.
Asked if he himself under-
stood Einstein's noted theory of
relatively, Prof. Fraenkel, who
has known Einstein intimately
for the past quarter-century,
declared "the theory of rela-
tivity is one of the easiest to
understand: Our grandchildren
will be astounded that this gen-
eration didn't understand it."
A one-time secretary to Ein-
stein, Prof. Edwin Sears, of the
Denver University law school,
said the famous scientist's fav-
orite story about his theory con-
cerns one yokel trying to ex-
plain it to another yokel. "You
see, when you are in the den-..
tist's chair, five minutes seems
like an hour. But when you
have a beautiful girl in your
arms, an hour seems like five
minutes." That's E i n s t e i n's
theory of relativity.
