In Memoriam
NEW YORK, (AJP) — Arthur
Szyk, internationally-famous ar-
tist who supported the extremist
Irgun during the British man-
date in Palestine, died here after
a brief illness. He was 57.
Szyk waes an active member
of the American League for a
Free Palestine, the chief front
group in the United States for
the Irgun. He dropped out of
the organization shortly after
the State of Israel was proclaim-
ed.
He applied his talents for the
new state in an illuminated
scroll of the Israel Declaration
of Independence. For many
years, his work dealt with Bibli-
cal themes, many of them gra-
cing the nation's foremost publi-
cations.
Born in Poland, Szyk came to
the United States, explaining he
wanted to live here because he
regarded this country as "the
inner bastion of democracy."
One of the most impressive
achievements by Szyk was a
series of illustrations for the
Hagadah, on which he labored
four years. It required three
years to complete its publication
in 1940. Each of the 240 copies
of the limited edition sold for
$500.

A Difficult Art
The art of making friends seems to be a difficult one, particu-
larly for Jews. Jews have always taken a natural interest in and
shown sympathy with the struggle of oppressed nations for inde-
pendence. It came, therefore, as a shock to learn that Indonesia
had chosen Hjalmar Schact, Hitler's financial wizard, as its ad-
visor. No freedom-loving nation should have any use for nazis.
Iran is another nation which is making a strong bid for inde-
pendence. Yet it has seen fit to close down its consulates in Israel,
which had been established only some months earlier. Another
case in point is India. That country has recognized the State of
Israel-but as yet there has been no exchange of ambassadors. It
should be remembered that the number of Jews who took an
interest in India's fight for freedom was quite considerable.

Horatio Lafer, Brazilian Minister of Finance, who is at present
a visitor to Washington, is Jewish. He has a distinguished career
in the Brazilian diplomatic service and represented his country in
the League of Nations. He is related to the Klabins, the wealthiest
Jewish family in Brazil and generous contributors to Jewish
causes. The Klaban family and -Vargas have been friends for
many years. One of Vargas' sons served as an apprentice in one
of the Klabin factories. The New York Times welcomed Lafer to
the United States in an editorial.
Theme and Variation
' Professor Louis Finkelstein, president of the Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary, is breaking the lance for Professor Maclver. Accord-
ing to my good friend and former classmate, Maclver is a scholar,
a gentleman and a great liberal. Exactly a year ago Maclver was
awarded the Seminary's honorary title of Doctor of Letters and
he is connected with the Institute of Religious and Social Studies
sponsored by the Seminary. If the charges that have been lev-
elled against Maclver by various writers have any basis, then the
Seminary and its president are somewhat on the spot.
