PVT. MORTIE GOLDSTEIN,
with the U. S. Army in Germany,
writes • about the valiant efforts
still being made to instill in the
German people some elements
of democracy and self-reliance.
. • . The experiment for a time
was not proving too successful
. . The tradition of subservi-
ence was too strong to be
thrown off lightly . . . Some
while ago, writes Mortie, one of
our public relations officers, in a
periodic meeting with German
newsmen, sought to make clear
to them that they were now
privileged to criticize the mili-

criticism Wasn't malicious . . .

WEST SHOKAN. N.Y. — Stu-
dent leaders from 70 American
and Canadian Universities and
Jewish students from Britain
and Israel were told that there
was "no question mark hovering
over t h e future of American
Jewry."
Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld, na-
tional director of Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundation, declared at
the National Hillel Summer In-
stitute at Camp High Point that
there would be no mass emigra-
tion of American Jews. "Some
of our youth will respond to the
challenge of Israel by helping to
build it, in the best tradition of
Judaism and of Americanism,"
Rabbi Lelyveld said. "But all ex-
cept thoSe • few must dedicate
themselves'-to building a vital
and creative Jewish life in
America."
Five British students and one
Israeli, who are on a tour of
American Jewish institutions
under the auspices of the Bnai
Brith Hillel Foundations, par-
ticipated in the sessions and
gave the Americans an insight
into Jewish student life in their
respective countries.
Avraham Harman, Counselor
of the Israel Embassy, told the
group that Jews have ceased to
be- - a European people • and that
there are only two major con-
centrations of world Jewry today
—in Israel and in America.
