Rubiner's Second Bar Mitzvah

Training of a Jewish Youth
Is Indelible After 40 Years

An amazing series of coinci- idents today recall Cantor Rub-
dences , befell Judge Charles
Rubiner when on his 53rd birth-
:: day he traveled
to Traverse- City,
city of his
birth, to attend
the Bar Mitz-
Wah of a young
immigrant boy,
and celebrated
the event by
chanting t h e
Haftorah of his
:7: own Bar Mitz-
Rubiner vah of 40 years
ago in the very synagogue where
his father served as Chazon.
Rubiner made the jciurney in
response to an invitation from
Dr. Leonard Sidlow, a member
..of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, of
which Rubiner is president. It
was his first trip "home" since
his family moved from Traverse
City when he was five-years-old.
The story actually begifis sev-
eral years ago, however, when
Henry Adler and his family, sur-
vivors of the notorious concen-
tration camp at Buchenwald,
came via Joint Distribution
Committee funds to the United
States, and went to Traverse
City to-live.

•
The Adler's eldest youngs-
ter, John Steve, was to ob-
serve his 13th birthday this
year, and the father wanted
Johnny. to have a Bar Mitzvah
like any other Jewish boy. The
father, who before his rescue
by JDC had foresaken Juda-.
ism, had returned to fold of
Jewish life.,
Since the Jewish community
of Traverse City consists of only
20 Jewish families, who are well
integrated; it - was not unusual
that the Adler family should
learn that visiting Dr. Sidlow. at
his summer home in Traverse
was Rabbi Morris Adler, spirit-
ual leader of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, but. no relation.
Rabbi Adler was asked by the
father to officiate at the Bar
Mitzvah of his son, since there
is no rabbi hi Traverse. Dr. Sid-
low and his brother, Ben, be-
gan training the boy in the
chanting of the service. There
was not enough time, however,
for the lad to learn the Haftor-
ah.
At the Bar Mitzvah service on
Aug. 17, when the boy conclud-.
ed the Brochos, Rubiner - was
called upon to read the Haftor-
ah. Memories of 40 years ago
were 131 no means obliterated as
Rubiner unhesitatingly chanted
the first half by rote, and con-
cluded the second portion with
only occasional side glances at
the text.
It was after the services
were over that Rubiner learn- ,
ed he had participated in cere-
monies at, the synagogue at
which his father officiated 50
years earlier. Talking to resi-
dents of the city, Rubiner was
told that the plot of land, on
which the small synagogue
stands, was donated 75 years
ago by a lumber tycoon named
Hannah.
The synagogue was Construct-
ed shortly afterward, next to. a
Catholic Church and _bordering
on a Protestant Church. It was

The Adler family, who weath-
ered the storm of Nazi brutality
and disallegiance to Judaism,
have certainly been reconciled
to the faith of their fathers, for,
as Judge Rubiner explained, the
last words of Johnny's 11-year-
old brother Were, "Can I have a
Bar Mitzvah, too?"
