Ben-Gurion Calls UJA 11Iajor
Factor in Israel's Future

Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion of Israel, in a message
hailing the opening of the
United Jewish Appeal's nation-
wide fall campaign, declared
that the "assistance which
American JeWry provides
through UJA can be a major
factor in helping to assiire Is-
rael's future."
Mr. Ben-Gurion stressed that
"Israel requires greater sums
than ever before" to implement
a three year program "for ab-.
sorbing another 600,000 _Jews
from critical areas and for the
establishment of Israel's econ-
omy on a firm foundation."
The Prime Minister pointed
out that while the achievement

"also to seek funds outside of
the UJA, no one who has Israel's
future at heart will support for
a moment that UJA's import-
ance to Israel is thereby dimin-
ished."
"The people and the Govern-
ment of Israel," he emphasized,
"retain fullest interest in and
desire for the continued success
of the United Jewish Appeal."
The UJA's f a 11 campaign,
which op e n e d in 1,2130 com-
munities throughout the coun-
try after Labor Day, will seek to
raise large-scale funds for the
speedy carrying-out of an urg-
ent program involving 620.000
Jews in Israel, Europe, certain
Near Eastern countries and
North Africa.

A notorious underworld char-
acter was hailed on theft charg-
es before a Tel Aviv court on
the day the World Zionist Con-
gress opened in Jerusalem. The
defendant interposed a plea of
guilty. Before the judge passed
sentence he extended to the
criminal the privilege of making
a statement. To the surprise of
the judge and spectators the
man proceeded to deliver an im-
passioned patriotic address. In
glowing language he painted the -
miracle that is Israel, the ful-
fillment of prophecy and the
Zionist ideal. Turning to the
judge, he asked: "Wasn't it the
purpose of Zionism to give the
Jewish people a national status
of equality with other peoples?"
When he saw that the judge
nodded assent, he triumphantly
declared: "Now that we are like
the rest of the nations it is.only
right and natural for us to have
an underworld as well as a po-
lice force. The arresting officer
belongs to the police force, I am
a member of the underworld."
His argument must have im-
pressed the judge for he gave
the admitted thief a suspended
sentence despite earlier intima-
tions of a severe penalty.
