Jewish Checker Star
Plays Champion Here
The Checker Championship of
the world comes to Detroit as
another outstanding feature of
the 250th birthday festival. The
40-game match starting Nov. • 3
will be held at the Statler Hotel.
The meet will bring together
Newell W. Banks, of Detroit,
blindfold checker champion of
the world, and Samuel Cohen,
of. London, England, European
champion. Banks holds in-
numerable records, including the
world's championship speed rec-
ord at mixed play, both chess
and checkers.
Cohen, 45 year-old British and
European champion, first gained
international fame at 21 when
he was the youngest member of
the British Team, which visited
the United States in 1927.
The public is also invited to
watch Banks display his blind-
fold checker wizardry during the
Michigan State - Fair, at the
Music Bowl and the Chrysler
Building, both events brought
here by the Plymouth Dealers
of Greater Detroit.
Bnai Brith Institute
To Be Held on Sept. 16
The annual Bnai Brith Insti-
tute, sponsored by the Greater
Detroit Bnai Brith Council, will
