Weizmann Begins Consultations
On Formation of Israel Cabinet
Pe"
TEL AVIV (JTA)—President
Chaim. Weizmann has begun
preliminary consultations with
leaders of Israel's political par-
ties on the formation of a new
Cabinet for • the Jewish state.
During the week-end he received
leaders of the Mapai, Israel's
Labor Party, which secured the
largest number of votes in the
Parliamentary elections, Later,
he received leaders of the Gen-
eral Zionist Party, second place
party in the Parli - nent.
Zalinan Shazar, _one of the
Mapai leaders who represented
his party at the consultations
with Presiuent Weizmann, told
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency
that he reported to the Presi-
dent that Mapai is prepared to
broaden the present coalitionary
Cabinet on the bails of the fun-
damental principle') outlined re-
cently by Dayid Ben-Gurion.
These principles, he said, pro-
vide for an unmodified Israel
policy toward the United Na-
tions, an economic system as
practiced by the present regime,
no state theocracy although
reasonable religious claims
should be fulfilled.
Dr. Peretz Bernstein, leader of
the General Zionists, reported
that he told President Weimann
that his party is ready to_con-
stitute a new government if so
requested and that the party
hopes to formulate a satisfactory
program for inclusion of the
Mapai in a coalition Cabinet. On
the other hand, if requested by
the Mapai to join a new coali-
tionary Cabinet, • the General
Zionist Party will advance the
following conditions:
1. A unified state education
system; 2. Nationalization of
the social welfare and medical
services; 3. Government con-
trol of labor exchanges; 4. Re-
moval of politics from the civil
service system; 5. An economic
policy based on free enterprise
with the ultimate removal of
the controls now in effect.
Meanwhile, Premier David
Ben-Gurion invited all parties
in Israel except the Communists
and the right-wing Herut—to
participate in a new government
based on the foreign and econ-
omic policies of the last Mapai
cabinet. The policies of that
government, he told the world
Labor Zionist conference here,
had been endorsed by the elec-
torate when it gave the labor
parties a majority.
"Personally," Mr. Ben-Gurion
declared, "I shall not partici-
pate in any government which "
opposes the Mapai's program,
and I hope that the Mapai
will not join any government
which ignores the aims of the
labor front."
In an evaluation of the recent
elections, he stated that two
things had emerged clearly: that
the people had rejected the left-
wing Mapam Party's ,"Eastern-
orientated foreign policy;" and,
that they had also rejected the
General Zionists economic pro-

gram by giving '75 per cent of
their votes to parties which sup-
port the former government's
economic policies.
In a sharp attack on the Zion-
ist Organizatior of America, the
Premier said that its name was
misleading. He said that from its
name it could be inferred that
it embraced the entire Zionist
movement in the United States
when, in fact, it was only one of
a number of American Zionist
groups. It should better call it-
self an organization identified
with the right-win e; and oppos-
ing the labor movement in Is-
rael, he asserted.
Mapai to Have 45 Seats
Official announcement of the
final election returns disclosed
that the Mapai . Party which
polled 37.3 per cent of the vote,
would have 45 seats in the new
Parliament, a loss of one seat.
The General Zionists will have
20 seats, a gain of 13. Mapam,
which received 12.5 per cent of
the vote, will have 15 seats in
the new Parliament as against
20 in the old. Poale Mizrachi
gained two seats and will have
eight deputies, the same number
as Herut, which lost six seats.
Mizrachi, which lost two seats,
will be represented by two depu-
ties. Agudas Israel will have
three deputies, a loss of one seat.
Poale Agudah 'retained its two
seats and the Communists, who
gained two, will now have five.
The Progressives, who lost one
seat, will have four. The Sep-
hardim lost two seats but -will
retain two and the Yemenites
retained their single seat.

Zionist House Nears Completion
Passing the southwest corner
of Linwood and Lawrence, it
will be -noted that the Zionist
House remodeling is near com-
pletion. Situated in an area
covered by a large Jewish-popu-
lation, many Jewish institutions,
and public schools, the location
bids fair to become a center of
Zionist a c t i v i t i e s, especially
youth work.
