annual George Gershwin Me-
morial Contest which is held to
honor the memory of the late
George Gershwin and to en-
courage young American com-
posers. The contest closes Aug.
31.
Each entry must be original
and unpublished, and by an
Anierisan composer under. 30
years of age. The composition
must not exceed 15 minutes. De-

Joseph Stalin opposed the mar-
riage of his favorite daughter

on the grounds that the bride-
groom was Jewish, but finally
relented, a leading Italian

The Soviet ruler's daughter
was married last month amid a
two-week shower of glitter and
flowing vodka, dispatches from
London disclosed. Thousands of
high Communist officials report-
edly attended the ceremony in
Moscow.
AcCording to the Italian
paper, Stalin would have pre-
ferred a military leader or
statesman as a son-in-law. It
was the second marriage for 27-
year-old Svetlana. The where-
abouts of her first husband re-
mains a mystery.

is pioneering a play-writing
contest. First prize is a $250 „Is-
rael bond, second prize a $100
Israel bond and third prize a $50
Israel. bond.
