Prentis Retires
As GM Treasurer

Joseph Epel Awarded
Ph.D. from Wayne U.;
To Address Technion

On Sept. 25, Dr. Joseph' Epel
will address the Detroit Chap-
ter of the American Technion
Society on "The' New Uses of
Plastics." Dr. • Epel only last
month was awarded his • doc-
torate degree at Wayne Univer-
sity. His treatise was on "Light
Scattering Methods... for Deter-
mining the Size of Large Col-
loidal Particles."
Previously, Dr. Epel received a
BS degree from Wayne in 1943
in the field of physical chemis-
try. From
om 1941 to 1.945 he
worked in the chemical research
department of U.S. Rubber Co.-
In 1944, .11?. was 'a co-founder
the Hefco Laboratory,. a.. them-
teal consulting firm, of which he
was vice-president.
In 1949, he devoted his com-
plete time to studying for his
doctorate degree. He was in the
U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946.
Currently, Dr. Epel is a. vice-
president of the Horace G. Pres-
ton Co., where he is working on
the development of commercial
plastic applications for such in-
dustrial items as hydraulic
pumps. His address to the Tech-
nion will describe the Possibil-
ities and new uses of plastics in
construction, in the home and"
in automobiles.
Dr. Epel and his wife, Bea-
trice, live at 2030 Gladstone, and
have an eight -month- o 1 d
daughter, Naomi Cecile. His par-
ents are both active in JeWish
affairs, his father, Jacob, is the

and his mother, Anna, in the
Pioneer Women's Organization.

treasurer of the Detroit Tech-
nion Society is public relations.

will honor Rev. Joseph Q.
Mayne, former executive secre-
tary of the Detroit Round Table

Rev. Mayne
will leave De-
troit for Grand

Rev. Mayne he will be the
spiritual leader of one of the
largest •churches in that city.
For . many years he has worked
closely with the Jewish com-
munity to foster better inter-
personal relationships between
religious and social groups.

plans were formulated for the
coming season. Mrs. Irving
Small, vice president, is arrang-

The League has been cooper-
ating with Israel bond drive, the
250th birthday celebration: of
Detroit, and the drive for spon-
sors of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra.

Hechalutz Training
Farm Is Damaged by
Anti-Semitic Vandals

POUGHKEEPSIE, N. Y. (JTA)
—The sheriff of Dutchess Coun-
ty began an investigation of
race prejudice which led to the
smashing of windows and doors
at a Hechalutz training farm
near the town of Verbank• The
vandals committed their acts
while the stucl,ents and instruc-
tors at the Hachshara center
were watching movies.
The sheriff described the van-
dalism as "an outgrowth of ra-
cial prejudice," revealing that he
had received previous reports of
"young people" mocking the
trainees whenever they passed
the camp. The sheriff offered an
award for the identification of
the hoodums.
