Historiette:

Battling Barney Aaron
Wowed Them in 1800

By FRANK SIMONS

An American Jewish Press Feature

The sport world called him
the "little Jew boy." In more
polite circles he was known as
"the star of he East." This was
Barney Aaron, who in the days
of the bare knuckled tireless
monarchs of the ring, fought his
way to the top in Britain's prize
fighting history.
Barney Aaron was born Nov.
21, 1800, in England, and by the
time he was 19 had distinguished
himself as a "corner." There were
many Jews in the prize fight
game at that time, but Barney
Aaron beat them all, including
Manny Lyons, Angel ITyams,
Samuel, Abraham and Israel Be-
lase°.
Although frequently several
pounds underweight, Barney
consistently beat his opponents.
Often times it was necessary for
the fight to, last 40 rounds. He
was knocked out only twice, the
first time in-the 57th round after
710 minutes of bitter fighting.
A chant of victory, written by
"a singer of Israel" to the tune
of "Rose of Sharon," today still
marks his being:

Houndsclitch and the Lanes rejoice
Where the mart for clothes is;
Hebrew science lifts its voice,
Aaron proves a Moses.
Barney Aaron! Barney Aaron!
Through the syn-a-gogue and streets,
Rabbis, with their oily 'air on
Shout 'is name and praise 'is feats.

Funds raised by Camp Nahelu
at its annual circus carnival,
which was held at the camp last
month, will this year be sent to
the Jewish Fresh Air-Society to
furnish tuition to three needy
Jewish children for a three-week
period at the Jewish Fresh Air
Camp.
In The Jewish News last week
it was inadvertently stated that
the funds would send young-
sters to Camp Nahelu. In pre-
vious years, Camp Nahelu's car-
nival has provided funds for
Jewish orphans in Europe, the
Allied Jewish Campaign and
other worthy organizations.
