Posthumous Essay by Rabbi Liebman Offers
lilessage of Faith Opposed to Pessimism
Basing his own optimistic view
of life on his religious faith and
his understanding of the mind
process and emotional structure
of man, the late Rabbi Joshua
Loth Liebman made a frontal
attack on the exponents of
despair in one of a series of
lectures at the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Re-
ligion in Cincinnati three years
ago.
That address by the former
Boston rabbi, author of the best-
seller, "Peace of Mind" is pub-
lished now by the Joshua Loth
Liebman Department of Human
Relations of the College-Insti-
tute, Dr. Liebman's alma mater,
under the title, "The Meaning of
Life."
Dr. Liebman leveled his shafts
especially at the "prophet of
man's absurdity," Jean - Paul
Sartre; Kierkegaard, "prophet of
human sin and guilt"; Kafka,
with his "dark portrayals" of
life, and Dostoyevsky, "who pro-
claimed that there is meaning
to life as long as man feels a
sense of anguish."
Loneliness and a feeling of
alienation, Dr. Liebman contend-
ed, are a major source of this
contemporary feeling that life is
meaningless. "I am sure,' he
Temple Israel to Hold

Temple Israel announces that
Sabbath Services" will continue
through the summer, every Fri-
day at 8:30 p.m. in the main
auditorium of the Temple.
During the weeks when Rabbi
Leon Fram is out of the city on
vagation, lay leaders of the con-
gregation will officiate. Cantor
Robert S. Tulman will chant the
services accompanied by Karl W.
Haas at the organ.
This Friday, Charles L. Gold-
stein, past president of the con-

N. Y. Temple Ousts
Rabbi B. Lowell
NEW YORK (AJP) —Rabbi
Benjamin Lowell, storm center
of pro-Communist charges for
the past two years, was ousted
as spiritual leader of a small
suburban temple after a stormy
four-hour meeting at which
police were alerted to maintain
order.
Lowell was ousted as spiritual
leader of the Elmhurst, L. I.,
Temple Emanu-El, six months
after his resignation as admin-
istrative secretary of the Hillel
Foundations, the campus reli-
gious-education branch of Bnai
Brith.
The refusal of the congrega-
tion to renew his contract, which
expires July 31, stemmed from
charges of pro-Communist ties
and a sharp difference of opin-
ion on religious instruction of
the temple's youth, it was re-
ported.
Members of the congregation
vetoed a renewal of Rabbi Low-
ell's contract by a 76-50 vote.
Contacted by a metropolitan
newspaper at a Massachusetts
camp where he is engaged as
director, Rabbi Lowell said the
argument surrounding his ouster
did not involve Communism,"
but a difference of opinion on
how to conduct services."
"They wanted to tell me what
to say and • how to say it," he
exclaimed.

ence again and again with their
patients this mood which could
be labeled, not-only the sense of
alienation, but the feeling of
depersonalization, a feeling that
one doesn't belong; that one is
an alien, an outcast, a stranger
here, not merely physically but
psychically and spiritually."
