Conservative Rabbis Pledge
To Revitalize the Sabbath
•KIAMESHA LAKE, N.Y. (JTA)
—An intensive effort to revital-
ize observance of the Sabbath
by Conservative Jews through-
out the United States and Can-
ada was endorsed by the 275
Members of the Rabbinical As-
sembly of Anierica, meeting at
their 51st annual convention at
the Hotel Concord.
The Rabbis pledged t h e m-
selves to make observance of the
Sabbath the primary task in
congregations during the corn-
ing year. Rabbi Max Davidson
was re-elected president.
In his report of the activities
of. the Assembly during the
1950-51 period, Rabbi Max J.
Routtenberg, executive v i c e-
president, pointed out: "The
American Jewish community
continues to be the most under-
staffed religious denomination
in American life.
"Hundreds of small, isolated
Jewish communities through-
out the land are compelled to
go without any spiritual lead-
ership whatsoever, or, what is
frequently worse, fall prey to
the free-lance charlatans who
wreck incalculable damage on
their unsuspecting victims."
Dr. Mordecai M. Kaplan, dis-
tinguished theologian, said at
the afternoon session : "Not until
religious leaders 9f the principal
religions in the world can agree
on some minimum workable
program that would make pos-
sible an organization which
would render religious diversity
compatible with ecumenical
unity, can religion amount to
more than a verbalization of
wishful thinking."
A call for a united religious
Jewry lit America was issued by
Rabbi Davidson. The leader
said that, "the rabbis and con-
gregations • of America dissipate
and fragmentize their strength

PARIS—A resolution express-
ing regret over the decision
taken by the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America to support the
General Zionists in Israel was
adopted here Tuesday at meet-
ing of General Zionist Council.
Delegates from 15 countries par-
ticipated in the session.
The Council pointed out that
by identifying itself with the
General Zionists in Israel the
Zionist Organization of AMerica
"endangered the unity of the
World Confederation of General
Zionists."
Another resolution adopted by
and their power." He argued
that more Jews are associated
with organized synagogue life
than with any other functioning
Jewish institution in America.
Rabbi Davidson recommend-
ed that the Assembly appoint
a special committee to con-
sider the question of organiz-
ing a campaign for a strong
synagogue Council and failing
that, for "a new American
Jewish Conference, which will
be composed exclusively of
congregational and religious
groups." He also urged the
formation of a new Zionist
party in the United' States
composed of "like-minded per-
sons" of every religious com-
plexion in America. -
.
"There are parties dedicated
to protect the rights of -labor
and parties to protect the pri-
vileges of private enterprise, and
parties to support a State re-
ligion. I propose a 'party ded-
icated to restore and revive re-
ligion for the modern Jew in
the Jewish state," he declared.
He pointed out that the Con-
servative movement "has helped
to build Zion principally from
without, but now the time has
come to help build Zion prin-
cipally from within." He ad-
vocated the establishment of a
Conservative center in Israel
subsidized for religious and so-
cial studies,
The Convention heard two
vitally-important papers on
pressing problems relative to
the status of women in Jewish
law. The subject of "Halitzah"
—the Jewish law requiring a
childless widow to be released
from marriage to her brother-
in-law—was presented by Rab-
bi Isaac Klein, Springfield,
Mass. Methods of providing
relief for an "agunah"—a de-
serted wife—were presented by
Rabbi David Aronson, Minne-
apolis, Minn. The Convention
resubmitted the subjects to its
Committee on Jewish Law and
Standards for additional study.
The convention heard an ad-
dress by James Marshall, son of
the late Louis Marshall, former
president of the New York City
Board of Education, adviior to
UNESCO, attorney and author.
Addressing the 250 rabbis at-
tending the Assembly session,
Dr. Louis Finkelstein, president
of the Jewish Theological Sem-
inary of America, said that the
Nordic racial theory is still in-
fluencing the American immi-
gration laws. "America and the
free will cannot survive unless
the prophetic principle of broth-
erhood of man is universally
recognized and practiced," he
declared.
He spoke at a dinner in honor
of Dr. Mordecai Kaplan, past
president Of the Rabbinical As-
sembly, in connection with Dr.
Kaplan's 70th birthday.

seasons.
We do have more room for more
campers and will be happy to enroll
your child, too.
