Spread of Yiddish as
Language in New State
NEW YORK (AJP) — A lead-
ing Israeli journalist entered
the thorny debate over the role
Yiddish should
lay- in the Jew-
ish state and
the
:development of
popular Yiddish
*culture in Is-
rael.

Heitman for• two official
languages, Joseph Heftman;
president of the Israeli Journ-
alists Association, told Yiddish
newsmen at a luncheon here
that "good prospects exist for
the development of Yiddish -cul-
ture in Israel and such develop-
ment is desirable for the spirit-
ual development of the Jewish
state." He pleaded_ for patience
on the part of pro-Yiddish ele-
ments.
Heitman said he personally
favored "the development of a
popular • culture in Israel." He
reiterated, however, that "Re-
brew alone can gap the spirit-
dal bridge" in the Jewish state.
Dealing with the absence of
a Yiddish inflUence in Israel,
Heitman, editor of the General
Zionist daily Habokar, pointed
out that while there were two
German-language dailies and a
Hungarian paper, none of these
represented a threat to Hebrew.
Under the chairmanship of
Boris Wise, scores of volunteers
will participate in the annual
solicitations for the Jewish Na-
tional Fund, • through the sale
of buttons and flags; and by
youth groups.
Representatives of Habonim,
Hashomer Hatzair, Bnai Akiva,
United Hebrew, Schools, Young

Among the very significant events that marked the visit
in Detroit of Israel -Prime Minister David Ben-GurionWas the
Session the visiting statesman had with Henry Ford II. Mr. Ford
was :host- to- Mr. [3 . 6riGueion and his immediate associates, in-
cluding the Hon. Theodore Kollek, Israel Minister Plenipotenti-
ary, at luncheon in his priVate dining room at the Ford Motor
Co. plant in Dearborn, Mich. Ford Co. officials were present
at the informal meeting. It is believed that the friendship already
established between Israel and the Ford Motor Co. has been
further enhanced by this visit.

Benjamin Laikin and Irving/
Schlussel, president and chair-
man of the board of the' JNF
here, in an appeal to the com-
munity, _ urged that contribu-
tions this year be larger than
ever.
"Israel needs funds and we
must be more liberal than ever,"
they stated.
The Flag Day collections com-
menced Thursday evening. They
will continue Saturday night
and all day Sunday.
