Exhibit Honor s Anna,Werbe

Anna Werbe ; for many years
a prominent figure in Detroit
art circles, held a one-person
showing of her work at the Ar-
thur U. Newton Galleries, 11 E.
57th St., New York. In a fore-
word to this exhibit's program,
Edgar P. Richardson, director of
the Detroit Institute of Fine
Arts, stated:
"This exhibition of the work
of Anna Werbe is interesting to
us in Detroit for two reasons,
one of which has nothing to do
with her painting but is none-
theless a good reason. No one
has worked more energetically
for the artists of Detroit than
she; for many years she gave
more of her energy to the prob-
lems of other artists than to her
own career. For this reason we
are fond of her and interested in
her work.
"But there is another reason.
After a long period of descrip-
tive painting she has turned in
the last few years to the explor-
ation of an inner world of her
own feelings and thoughts.
These visions she is now paint-
ing, strange or sad, are not an
imitation of other artists' work
or of fashions in the world of
art. They arise out of her own
life.
"Where will this new path
lead her? We watch with inter-
est this inner development of a
painter's life - toward what un-
known goal? Perhaps in the
world of New York some of
these visions may find a res-
ponse."
Included in the selection of
oil paintings, watercolors and
ivory miniatures were a portrait
in oil of Mrs. Julius Gilbert and

an ivory miniature portrait of
Mrs. Milton Alexander.
"Presentimenf," w a t e r c o for
award of the Detroit Institute of
Arts, and "Chicago Roofs,"
memorial purchase award of the
Detroit Instituteof Arts, both in
the permanent collection of the
Institute, were also on exhibit.
Michigan landscapes and De-
troit scenes were among the
many interesting subjects which
Mrs. Werbe presented in her
exhibition.
