Emil Cohn's 'Stories and Fantasies'

Few Jewish writers of our
time are as well equipped as
•Emil Bernhard Cohn to describe
the spirit of the Jew. The Ber-
lin-born philosopher, who would
have turned 70 this year, be-
came rabbi in his native city
and early in life became famous
for his literary gifts. He was
imprisoned by the Nazis in 1935
but managed to escape to Hol-
land and came to the United
States in 1939. He was killed in
an accident in San Jose, Calif.,
Feb. 28, 1948.
He was noted also as a play-
wright and some of his produc-
tions were staged by Max Rein-i
hardt. His strong convictions
on Jewish matters and his ar-
dent stand in support of Zion-
ism forced his resignation from
the Berlin rabbinic post in 1907,
but he was recalled to the rab-
binate there in 1925.
During his brief residence in
this country, he held rabbinic
posts but continued his literary
activities. H i s biography of
David Wolffsohn, who succeeded
Theodor Herzl to the presidency
.of the World Zionist Organiza-
tion, was published by the Zion-
ist Organization of America. He
also wrote for non-Jewish pub-
lications under the name Emil
Bernhard. His last novel under
that name, entitled "Der Pan-
t h e r f e 1 I," was published in
Switzerland in 1950.
The Jewish Publication So-
ciety of America has just is-
sued his "Stories and Fantasies
from the Jewish Past." In an
excellent English translation
from the German by Charles
Reznikoff, this collection of
stories and essays delves into
the spiritual wealth of ou r
people. The 10 stories fascinat-
ingly describe outstanding his-
torical incidents. _
"Honi Ha-Meaggel" deals with
the famous sage who slept 70
years and awoke to find that
the labors of men have borne
fruit. Then there is "The Le-
gend of Akiba," the story of the
famous scholar and fighter for
Jewish freedom. "The Rebelli
ous Tree" is a charming story
about Rabbi Simeon ben Yphai-.
There is a fine tale about

Rabba.n Gamliel. "Rabbi and
Emperor" describes the friend-
ship that was cemented be-
tween Rabbi Judah and Marcus
Aurelius Antoninus.
In its totality, "Stories and
Fantasies from the Jewish Past"
adds to the glory of the name
of the eminent author.
