History of Congregation Beth Moses,
On Occasion of Synagogue Dedication

Forty-nine years ago. five in-
dividuals met at the home of
the late H. Silver, on Gratiot
Ave., and founded a Congrega-
tion Beth Moses Anshe Roman-
ia. For three years, services were
held in that home. By 1905, the
congregation had grown strong
enough to purchase a cottage on
Adelaide Street. The financial
needs of the congregation were
met by membership dues
amounting to 10 cents a week
per member.
- After 11 years, the congre-
gation could afford the purchase
of a house, which was converted
into a synagogue, on Hendrie
Street. It was used until 1926. In
that year, the congregation
reached a decision to build its
own synagogue structure, on
Owen Avenue, which became
known as the "Romanishe Shul."
In the years following, infra-
urban migration caused a sub-
stantial change in the neighbor-
ing population, and necessitated
in 1940, the sale of that house
of worship.
The congregation then moved
into a double store on Linwood
and Blaine, with the intention
of using those quarters for a
short period. The subsequent
outbreak of the war and short-
ages of building materials fol-
lowed it, compelled the congre-
gation to postpone their build-
ing plans for a decade.
Last year, ground was broken
for a modern synagogue build-
ing on Linwood at Oakman. It
will be dedicated Sunday, April
29, at 2 p.m., when a chapter
will be opened in the history of
Congregation Beth Moses.
At the dedication program, in
addition to Emil Kahan, who
will give the presidential mes-
sage, and Rabbi Isidor Schnee-
balg, the newly appointed spirit-

ual leader of the congregation,
greetings will be extended by
Rabbis L. Levin and Samuel H.
Prem. . Cantor Hyman Adler will
render musical selections. Harry
Anbender will be chairman. A
reception, tendered by the Sis-
terhood of the congregation, will
follow the ceremonies.

WASHINGTON, D. C. (AJP)-
One congressman had nothing
to say about Israel or the Israel
aid bill now being studied in
committee here. He is Rep. John
E. Rankin, who described him-
self in the Congressional Record
as the "dean" of the Mississippi.
Here is a report 'of a tele-
phone conversation with the of-
fice Of Mr. • Rankin, who is sup-
ported by a gentleman named
Gerald L. K. Smith. .
A female voice answers.
"May I speak to Mr. Rank-
in's press officer?" an American
Jewish Press reporter asked.
"Mr. Rankin has no press of-
ficer:" the female voice replied.
"He has only secretaries and
clerks, What are you calling
about?"
"I'd like to know if Mr. Rank-
in will be good enough to com-
ment on Israel and the Israel
aid bill," asked the newsman.
"What bill?"
"Israel aid bill—I SR AE L,"
he said spelling out the name
of the Jewish state.
"I think you'd better speak to
Mr. Rankin himself."
"Fine, Thank you very much.
I'll hold on."
The reporter waited a few mo-
ments and then the female voice
spoke:
"Mr. Rankin is talking on the
other telephone. But I don't
think he'd care to make any re-
marks about Israel," she said.
