Dr. Gaberman Pays
Tribute to Memory
Of Dr. S. S. Wise

In commemoration of the third
year since the passing of Rabbi
Stephen Wise, Dr. David B. Gab-
erman delivered a eulogy be-
fore the Detroit chapter of the
American Jewish Congress
which bears his name. Following
are some excerpts from his text:
"April 19 marks the third an-
niversary of the passing of our
beloved leader, Rabbi Stephen
Wise. It was he who steadfastly
fought for an ever greater ap-
plication of the Constitutional
rights for every citizen, He was
a protagonist in the fight on
racism, clearly seeing it as the
basis for anti-Semitism.
"Fighting on every front for
human dignity, he was frequent-
ly alone, but dauntlessly pursued
his challenges until he won the
acclaim of the very people who
opposed him. It was he who ef-
fectively initiated the boycott
against Germany during the rise
of Hitler. He taught the Jew
that there is no such thing as
second class citizenship. He car-
ried the torch of Zionism into
this country. No problem was too
great for him.
"Let us pay respect to his
name by dedicating ourselves to
the pursuit of those principles
for which he so valiently
fought."
Dr. Gaberman is president of
the Wise Chapter.

Another Delay Hinted for World Zionist Congress

NEW YORK, (AJP)—The be-
lief that another postponement
of the World Zionist Congress is
possible is spreading in Zionist
circles.
The last Congress, normally
called every two years, was held
in 1946. The 1948 Congress was
cancelled because of the Israel
War orIndependence.
Party Zionist leaders in Israel
have announced they wish to
postpone elections to the next
Congress until after the nation-
al elections in July.
Such Zionist party elections,
American Zionists pointed out,
would make an August Congress
impossible.

No Congress could be held in
September because of the High
Holy Days, with the most defi-
nite possibility likely to be a new
date late in the fall or early next
winter.
