Kefauver-Like Trial In Israel
Matches Ben-Gurion Against
Communist Paper, Kol Haam
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—That Israel
is copying many American tech-
niques was illustrated in a new
light when earlier this week Is-
rael witnessed what might be
desCribed as their version • of the
Kef a uver hearings.
Premier David Ben-Gurion, in
bringing charges of libel against
the Communist newspaper Kol
Haam in a district court here,
rejected the witness stand be-
cause he didn't want any "spe-
cial privileges," and refused to
take an oath on "religious
grounds."
The charges grew out of an
article appearing in Kol Haam
which branded the Premier as a
"traitor to the nation and to the
working class." During the ex-
amination and cross-examina-
tion the court ruled that Ben-
Gurion had to reply to the de-
fense counsel's queries concern-
ing strategy during the War of
Liberation, but upheld his refus-
al to divulge military or state
secrets.
The Premier was asked to ex-
plain the presence in Israel dur-
ing the early months of the war
of a "Col. Harris," a former U. S.
army officer, who CommunistS
claim came to'organize Israel.
"Harris came as a volunteer',
spontaneously, as did many oth-
ers," Ben Gurion replied, refus-
ing to elaborate any further
since anything else he might say
was "likely to compromise the
security of the state."
Another question posed by the
defense council asked Ben-Gur-
ion whether he issued orders
Dec. 28, 1948 pulling back Israel
troops who had penetrated
Egyptian territory. Kol Haam

Bnai Brith Women
Raise 1 Million in '50
WASHINGTON (JTA) — More
than $1,000,000 was raised last
year by the 600 Chapters of
Bnai Brith Women's Organiza-
tion in this country for philan-
thropic, educational and other
activities, it was announced at
the four-day annual meeting of
the Bnai Brith Women's Su-
preme Council. About 200 dele-
gates, representing 125,000 mem-
bers of the organization, are at-
tending the conference.
Included in the total amount
raised was most of a quota of
$100,000 which the organization
pledged to raise over a three-
year period for construction of
a Bnai Brith children's home in
Israel. The building is to replace
a children's shelter damaged by
bombing during the Arab-Israeli
war. Another $400,000 has been
allocated to Americah youth
services. The women also raised
funds for direct aid to Israel
and made domestic philanthro-
pic grants to the American Red
Cross, cancer and infantile pa-
ralysis drives and other projects.
The organization gained 25,000
new members during the year, it

had charged that troops were
recalled on orders from the
United States.
"All my orders during war-
time," the Premier asserted,
"were issued to attain ultimate
victory and it is my opinion that
this was achieved." He refused
to answer additional questions
because he questioned the court-
room as a "proper" place to dis-
cuss Israel's relations with for-
eign countries.
Earlier in his testimony, Ben-
Gurion explained that he "had
.never said. .anything against the
Soviet government, but I con-
demned Jewish Communists,
who have in the past collabor-
ated with Russian program pro-
moters and later with a party
headed by the former G r and
Mufti of Palestine."

FEPC Legislation Introduced in State
The legislation which would
add Michigan to the list of
states having fair employment
practices is now in the legisla-
tive hopper of both houses of
the State Ligislature. This de-
velopment followed the intro-
duction last Friday of an FEPC
Bill in the Senate by Clarence A.
Reid of Highland Park. The bill
is identical in text to H.B. No.
318 previously introduced in the
House of Representatives by
Rep. Louis •Cramton of Lapeer.
The introduction of the Senate
measure followed a conference
between legislative leaders and
a committee representing the
Michigan committee on Civil
Rights consisting of Rev. Fred
Broad, Boris Joffe, and Rev.
Sheldon Rahn. The Jewish Com-
munity Council is affiliated with
the Michigan committee on Civil
Rights.

NEW YORK (AJP)—Meniber-
ship in congregations of the
three major American denomin-
ations all have increased in re-
cent years, but Jewish member-
ship increased the least.
The findings covered a 23-year
period, which indicated that the
t o t a l for all Americans had
jumped from 53 million in 1926
to more than 80,500,000 in 1949,
according to the National Coun-
cil of Churches of Christ.
The rise of slightly more than
50 percent in membership oc-
curred at a time when the total
population was going up by 30
percent.
The report said the Protes-
tant gain was 56 percent, the
Catholic Church, 48.4 percent,
and Jewish congregations, 22.5
percent, or 918,758 new Members.
The findings supported a
statement by Dr. Mordecai M.
Kaplan, Reconstructionist lead-
er, to the American Jewish
Press, in which he said he could
not agree with a wide-spread
belief that American Jews were
returning to their people in
greatly increased numbers

• Both the House and Senate
Bills are closely patterned after
the New York law which has
proven so effective in eliminat-
ing denial of employment oppor-
tunity when such denial is based
on the irrelevant factors of race,
religion, creed, color or national
origin. The bills are presently
awaiting action by the legisla-
tive committees to which they
have been referred.

fruit when he asked his long

"Bricks Without Straw."
The radio drama, 'fourth in a
