Buber Denies Seeking
German Appeasement

LONDON, (JTA) — P r o f.
Martin Buber, noted Jewish
philosopher, denied that he
had made statements on his
recent visit to Germany ad-
vocating Jewish-German rap-
proachment.
Prof. Buber said he had
merely told friends in Ger-
many that he did not think it
right that Jews should hate
Germans as such. E v e r y
German, he said, should be
treated as an ordinary hu-
man being provided there fs
no proof that he had lost
human qualities. This does
not mean that what had
happened in Germany could
ever be forgotten, he added.

Two Sought in Detroit
By Friends and Family

. LORETTA BEHRENS

A cute, 19-year-old redhead,
who wears a Star of David
around her neck, is fast becom-
ing one of America's top roller
skating personalities.
. The tiny lass, Loretta Behrens,
5' 2" 110-pound package of wheel-
ing dynamite, joined up with
the roller skate derby 10 months
back. She was fresh out of a
Bronx high school and anxious
to get into sports. •
Loretta first became interest-
ed in professional speed skating
after watching the teams race
at Madison Square on television.
Days later she approached the
coach of the Washington Jets,
one of the top derby teams, and
asked for a try. She made good.
The youngster patterned her
style of play after another great
Jewish star in Roller Derby
competition, Esther Runnee.
Esther was a daring jammer
who spun in for scores 'against
the top blocking opposition of
her day.
Loretta exhibits the same free
wheeling spirit. Presently play-:
ing with the Chicago Western-
ers team, Loretta is expected to
play a prime role in that team's
bid for the title in the National
Roller Derby League.

Air Raid Wardens Being Enlisted

Detroit's big drive to recruit 20,000 senior post air raid war-
dens, to be trained and ready for the eventuality of an air attack,
started Sunday, Clyde E. Dougherty is director of the city's office
of Civil Defense.
The ultimate goal of the drive is 100,000 senior post and block
wardens, so that the city will be covered with a working team of
five wardens in each residential block. Special teams also will
work in apartments, office and public buildings and factories.
Volunteer air raid warden applicants may go to OCD Head-
quarters, 704 E. Jefferson Ave., (the old Veterans' Building) or to
any police precinct station, or fire station, or may fill out and
mail the coupon printed in The Jewish News. An applicant must
be 21 years of age or older, must be a citizen and a resident , a
Detroit for at least a year. He must be "physically and mentally
capable of performing duties to which he is assigned, of good
moral character and unquestioned loyalty." A prospective warden
should not belong to any other emergency group having prior
claims on his services.
Women are especially urged to apply as wardens, because they
are needed for daytime duty in residential districts:
The city is divided into 13 areas for the purposes of the air
raid warden organization. Each area is inhabited by approxi-
mately 150,000 people.
