Today, Joseph Altman, the
one-time kid who hustled pa-
pers and w or k e d his way
through school because he
wanted to become a lawyer and
help others, prepares to begin
his seventh straight year as
mayor of one of the world's
most famous resort cities-the
sand, surf and salt water taffy
capitol of the United States:
Atlantic City.
Altman, known as just plain
'Mayor Joe" to the tens of
thousands who constantly cast
their ballots in his behalf, is
fast becoming a legend. His ad-
ministration is credited with a
host of improvements designed
to keep Atlantic City in the run-
ning as a first rate resort draw-
er in an era when a score of
other communities have at-
tempted to snare the top con-
vention spot.
Beginning his career as a
journal clerk in the State Sen-
ate, "Mayor Joe" was elected
Assemblyman from 1923-35.
Later he was voted by his col-
leagues as majority leader and
speaker in the New Jersey As-
sembly.
'Terms as City Recorder and
Prosecutor of the Pleas in At-
lantic County preceded Altman's
election to the City Commission
from 1940-44.
Altman is Atlantic City's sec-
ond Jewish mayor. Harry Bach-
arach, a member of a famous
New Jersey Jewish family, also
served the resort as chief exe-
cutive.

and Lee Pressman." He also as-
serts that Mr. Niles "is a Frank-
furter man from the old politi-
cal circles which included Harold
Laski, the English Communist."
Vitriolic attacks against the
Anti-Defamation League of the
Bnai Brith and the Non-Secta-
rian Anti-Nazi League are con-
tained in the articles by Pegler,
distributed by the -Kings Fea-
tures Syndicate and published
in numerous American news-
papers.
Terming the Non-Sectarian
Anti-Nazi League "a smear-
bund which stimulates friction
between Christians and Jews,"
Pegler directs his first especially
at Prof. James H. Sheldon,
administrative chairman of the
organization, and Isidor Lip-
schutz, well-known philanthro-
pist who has contributed gener-
ously to the Anti-Nazi League
and the Society for Prevention
of World War III. "The Anti-
Nazi. League," Pegler writes. "is
a secret service maintained by
Lipschutz to spy on Americans
who have the effrontery to
maintain their own ideas on
American foreign policy."

National Board of Review Opposes
Ban on Showing of 'Oliver Twist'
NEW YORK (JTA)-A resolu-
tion opposing the ban on ex-
hibiting the British-made film
"Oliver Twist" in the United
States was adopted by the di-
rectors of the National Board
of Review after they viewed a
private screening of the film.
The film has been withheld
from distribution in the United
States since 1948 after protests
by the Anti-Defamation League
and other Jewish groups on the
grounds that the character of

former members of the Nazi
party charged with destroying
the synagogue in the town of
Jever and with looting Jewish
homes in 1938 were sentenced
to prison terms varying from 18
months to three years.
