Jewish Mayors

The gripping hardships, ac-
complishments and moments
of humor in the lives of
American Jews who have
been chosen at the polls by
their fellow citizens to lead
communities will be told in
"America's Jewish Mayors", a
-series of article s. by the
- American Jewish Press, which
will be published in The Jew-
ish News.
The illustrated series, com-
piled by AJP reporters, takes
you into the city halls of
some of America's largest and
most progressive communities
where Jews serve as "City
Father s" and chart the
course of the community. .
Beginning with two mayors
who head America's foremost
resort cities, the series in-
cludes features on Jewish
mayors of small communities
totalling less than 3,000 resi-
dents as well as the larger
cities and metropolises wher
American Jews have won res-
pect a n d responsibility as
leaders of the community.
The series includes a fea-
ture article on America's
Jewish woman mayor, a little
lady who calls the signals and
charts the path for a small
New Jersey community.
A number of Jews have
served as Mayors in Michigan
cities. Readers having infor-
mation about them are urged
to transmit them to us for
eventual inclusion in this
series.

Israel Tensions Rising
Over East-West Block
Says Times Editorial

2479 W. Davison Ave.

TO. 8-0071

NEW YORK., (JTA) - The
tensions extant in the Middle
East are analyzed by the New
York Times in an editorial
which says that some of the
reasons for these tensions "stem
from the rise of Arab national-
ism," but points out that the
main reason is "the continuing
disparity between the military
power of the West and that, of
the Soviet bloc."
Another editorial on the same
issue dealing with the failure of
the UN General Assembly to
settle the problem of the status
of Jerusalem at its present ses-
sion, says: "Technically, the As-
sembly is still an record as es-
tablishing a separate interna-
tional enclave for Jerusalem
and its environs, while. realis-
tically, that development is a
manifest impossibility in view of
the refusal of both Israel and
Jordan to cooperate in such a
plan. It has never, seemed to us
that creation of a political en-
tity under UN control was nec-
essary or even desirable to pro-
tect the 'holy places."

Rokach Re-Elected

TEL AVIV - (JTA) - Mayor
Israel Rokach Monday was re-
elected to head the city admin-
istration. He received 19 votes,
an absolute majority of the
ballots cast in the new munici-
pal council. His re-election was
made possible by the conclusion
of a coalition agreement among
the centrist General Zionists,
who are headed in this city by
Mr. Rokach, the rightwing He-
rut party and the representa-
tives of various religious groups
and the single councillor of the
Landlord's Party. Sunday, when
Mayor Rokach failed to receive
more than 15 of the 16 votes
needed for election, the Herut
had abstained.
Jerusalem and Petach. Tikvah
municipal elections have been
postponed by the inability of
the religious groups to agree
among themselves and by their
failure to arrive at an agree-
ment with the rightwing parties.

Jewish Groups Seek
School Ban of Nativity

WHITE PLAINS, N. Y. (JTA)
•-The Board of Education here
voted to hold an interfaith con-
ference of Catholic, Protestant
and Jewish groups after Jan. 1,
to formulate -a policy for the
celebration of Christmas in the
local public schools.
The resolution was adopted
following protests received by
the . Board against an order is-
sued by the local school super-
intendent to omit the Nativity
scene from Christmas pageants
in the schools. The original
banning of the scene resulted
from protests by three rabbis
last year against the inclusion
of the Nativity scene in Christ-
mas plays because of possible
I embarrassment to Jewish pupils.
