Notes on a Dinner
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The editor OFF THE RECORD
of this community's English-
Jewish newspaper for the past
26 years, Noah W. Salz died last
week at the Jewish Hospital
here, the victim of a heart ail-
ment. He was 63 years old.
Born in Galicia, then part of
P o l a n d, Mr. Salz came to
America in 1914 and lived in
New York City until 1920. In
1925 he succeeded Leon Gell-
man as publisher of the Jewish
Record here, a weekly news-
paper written in both English
and Yiddish. Gellman heads the
World Mizrachi Organization
with headquarters in Israel.
Ten years later Mr. Salt as-
sumed the editorship of the
Record. He was known as a
scholar of Hebrew literature and
had published numerous Tal-
mudic books written by noted
rabbis in all parts of the United
States.
From 1930 to 1948, in con-
junction with the Record he
published a _ rabbinical journal
known as Hapardes.
Surviving Mr. Salz are his
wife, two sons, two daughters
and a stepson. Mr. Salz's sons,
both associated with their late
father in publishing the Jewish
Record, plan to continue the
work.
The Jewish Record is a mem-
ber-newspaper of the American
Association of English - Jewish
Newspapers.
Scintillating wit was the order of the day at the recent Inter-
faith in Action dinner for Herbert Bayard Swope, recipient of the
organization's 1950 Gold Metal Award for meritorious service to
the cause of interfaith and interracial amity. A big chunk of ap-
pluase went to Drew Pearson. When the noted columnist was call-
ed to pay tribute tO the guest of honor he related how Swope broke
him into journalism and taught him all the tricks of the trade.
"There is only one thing I have against Herbert and that is that
he hasn't taught me the art of pugilism," Pearson remarked amidst
a peal of laughter that must have reached the portals of brave
Senator McCarthy who has the boundless courage to dish out abuse
and vilification and libel while hiding under the petticoat of conz.
gressional immunity ... Claire A. Wolff, who handled the publicity
for the occasion, did quite an unorthodox thing when she append-
ed to the release the following human interest note about Swope:
"Had same wife for 35 years; the same secretary for 30 years and
the same household staff for 30 years." Claire said she had no
information on the turf winners Swope had .. . Incidentally the
dinner was a kosher one with neither butter nor cream for coffee
served with the meats. Some of our Jewish organizations who
seem to forget this little item when preparing dinner functions
would do well to make note of this.
