FDR Pictorial:
Great Biography
ITDR: A Pictorial Biography,"
by the noted historian, Stephen
Lorant, published by Simon &
Schuster' (1230 Sixth Aye., New
York 20), contains this dedica-
tion:
"For Connie who loved him.
and for Rene who hated him.
May those who loved him find
• in these pictures additional
proof that he was worthy of
their love, and those who
hated him recognize the hu-
man qualities which made him
great."
This dedication explains brief-
ly the significance of Mr. Lo-.
rant's most imriressive volume. It
is a convincing work. It does
not' try to in-
fluence anyone,
'4! since it is a pic-
torial record
with cutlines.
But the pictures
tel 1 a tremen-
dous story.-about
one of the
greatest men of
all time.
FDR
The 160 -- page
book consists of nearly 300
photographs of Franklin Delano
Roosevelt as well as 40,000
words of text. • Mr. Lorant ex-
amined over 100,000 pictures of
the late president . before choos-
ing the close to 300 - which ap-
pear in the volume. Many of
these were made available to
him and his 10-man research
staff by - hundreds of FDR's
friends, relatives and political
associates.
In gathering material for the
text Mr. Lorant read and re-
read virtually all of the books
and articles written by and
about President Roosevelt dur-
ing the past twenty years-
about 500 in all.
This painstaking research, ac-
cording to Mr. Lorant, was un-
dertaken in an attempt to cover
the highlights for FDR's life
with photos and text that would
complement one another. One
of the ways of accomplishing
this, was. by dividing the book
into about .75 pages of pictures
and text, each covering a par-
ticular phase of the late presi-
dent's life.
"FDR: A Pictorial Biography,"
according to Mr. Lorant, is "the
first one to give a thorough
visual account of President
Roosevelt's entire life story. It's
the sort of book which is needed
to fill in one of the gaps in the
FDR story. What we've tried to
do, and what we've accomplish-
ed, is to prepare a tightly-knit
pictorial b i o g r aphy of Mr.
Roosevelt, not just a scissor and
paste job."
Mr. Lorant says he tried to
make his book as objective as
possible-"as objective as any-
body can be about FDR," and
adds, "It might very well 'have
been subtitled 'Roosevelt in His-
torical Perspective'."
Discriminate Against
4,500 Bolivian Jews
BUENOS AIRES, (JTA) -Bo-
livian. consuls abroad make a
practice of not granting en-
trance visas to "Jews, Mongols
and Negrbes." The policy is un-
official. An attempt to legalize
it some eight years ago was
never followed through.
The 4,500 Jews living in Bo-
livia face a good deal of social
anti-Semitism. For example, if
a Jew is arrested, the police an-
nouncement of the action lists
the man's name preceded by the
word "Semite." The newspapers,
even those professing liberal
tendencies, publish the police
communiques unchanged. When
a Jew becomes a naturalized cit-
izen his documents are stamped
"naturalized" to distinguish him
from native-born Bolivians.
As a result of the social anti-
Semitism a large number of
Jews-more than now reside in
) the country - have emigrated,
making their way to Argentina,
Chile and the United States.
Most of the Jews now in Bolivia
came originally from Germany.
