Marshall Emphasizes Role of Jews
In Helping Defeat Hitler's Armies
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Admira-
tion for Israel's achievements
during its three years of exist-
ence despite the great difficul-
ties which the country faces was
expressed by General George C.
Marshall, Secretary of Defense,
at the $500-plate dinner at the
Waldorf - Astoria attended by
1,500 persons celebrating the
76th birthday of President
Chaim Weizmann of Israel and
the third anniversary of the
United Nations Palestine parti-
tion decision, which led to the
creation of Israel. The dinner
was sponsored by the American
Committee for the Hebrew
University, Weizmann Institute
of Science, and Haifa Technion,
which is currently conducting
-a campaign to raise $5,500,000 in
the United States.
Secretary Marshall compared
the difficulties faced by the
United States during the first
three years of its existence with
those now faced by Israel. He
expressed the conviction t hat
the Jewish state will grow and
develop and be of help even to
the neighboring Arab countries.
He paid high tribute to the role
which the Jews in Palestine
played in the Allied armies,
helping to defeat the Nazis in
the Middle East. He especially
emphasized the dangerous mis-
sions which Palestine Jewish
parachutists carried out behind
Nazi lines during the war.
Mr. Marshall's speech w a s
termed by Israel Ambassador
Abba Eban as an expression of
friendly relations between the
Jewish state and the United
States. Ambassador Eban noted
that the Secretary of Defense
took • the time to address the
dinner despite the crucial inter-
national situation which keeps
Mr. Marshall extremely busy
with matters of great concern
to the United States.
"Nov. 29, 1947, marks t h e
classic turning-point in the for-
tunes of Israel," Ambassador
Eban said. "Before that date we
achieved no victories. Since that
date we have suffered no de-
feats. Before the establishment

Emergency Controls
Extended for 6 Months
. The Israel Parliament h a s
passed a bill extending the Man-
datory Government's Emergency
Defense Regulations for another
six months, thus giving the gov-
ernment legal authority for
price, import and export con-
trols and rationing of essential
items.
The extension had been re
quested by Minister of Justice
Pinhas Rosen, who said that
government - drafted legislation'
to cover the 'same areas would
require at least six months of
discussion and debate in Parlia-
ment before it could be passed
and put into effect.
A bill establishing the normal
work week was sent back to the
legal committee for a second
reading. The bill provides that
Saturday shall be official day of
rest for Jews, while non-Jews
shall be guaranteed a day of
rest either on Friday or Sunday.
The Minister of Labor is em
powered by the bill to make ex-
ceptions in the case of essen-
tial services.
