New Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation:
Sunday's Important Ann Arbor Event

By RABBI HERSCHEL LYMON

This Sunday an event of ex-
traordinary importance will take
place in Ann Arbor. The first
annual pilgrimage to the site of
the new Bnai Brith Hillel Foun-
dation will signalize the begin-
ning of construction of a build-
ing that should represent the
finest and the best tendencies
in Jewish life.
It is particularly significant
that this event should take
place on Hanukah, the festival •
of Dedication and Re-Dedica-
tion. Like our Maccabean an-

social, and human needs of your
sons and daughters in the days
to come.
Thereby will they be enriched
in their lives, and thus shall the
entire Jewish people of this
state be rededicated and recon-
secrated for the great tasks that
lie ahead.

cestors, we too are •ededicat-
ing) an institution that in over
a quarter of a century's exis-
tence has done much to fur-
ther and enrich our cherished
Jewish values.
• The new structure gives prom-
. Ise of being one of the most
beautiful and useful of its type
on any campus of this country.
It will be a building that our
Jewish students will be tremen-
dously proud of. It will be a
landmark on the campus of the
University of Michigan.
Therefore, this pilgrimage on
the festival of Hanukah—the
first of annual pilgrimages in
the years to come. This should
be no alien sanctuary to the Jew-
ish people of Michigan: rather
should it be a sort of cultural
and - religious new Jerusalem
that belongs to all•our people in
this state.
I know that this project will
capture the imagination of all
who are vitally interested in the
.maintenance and preservation
of a healthy JeWish life. It is -
-:precisely Hillel, adequately
;• housed and comfortably • situat-
ed, which will exert an all-im-
portant influence on tens of
thousands of Jewish students at
an importantly - impressionable
age. Hillel will train our future
leaders, it will serve as a warm
and loving home to countless
• numbers of our young people.
There is no gainsaying the
importance of Bnai Brith—its
sons and daughterS.—in the
development of our project.
Without the parenthood of
Bnai Brith, there Would have
been no conception of Hillel.
And without Hillel, Jewish life
on over two hundred campuses
would be "weary, stale, flat,
and unprofitable."
However, it is up to the Jewish
community at large to take to
its bosom this child of Bnai
Brith, to nurture it, to support
it, to encourage it. For the new
'Hinel building will be a tribute
to the de votion and interest
of the entire Jewish popu-
lation, and as such will be
representative not only of the
foremost organization in Ameri-
can Jewish life today, but of the
spirit Of our larger community
for richness and dignity and ful-
fillment in its day by day living.
As we converge from all over
the state on Ann Arbor, like the
Jewish pilgrims of old, it will not
be for a gladiatorial spectacle. In
. the finest sense, it will be for
• the spiritual experience of re-
dedication: the construction of
a Hillel Foundation that will
satisfy the religious, cultural,
