Mufti Sought Direct Talks
On Palestine With Zionists

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Several
days before the adoption by the
United Nations General Assem-
bly of the resolution partition-
ing Palestine into separate Jew-
ish and Arab states, the ex-
Mufti of Jerusalem — Israel's
No. 1 enemy — approached the
Jewish Agency with an offer of
direct negotiations for solution
of the Palestine problem, it was
revealed in the Arab, daily Al
Yom, published in Jaffa.
The Jewish Agency rejected
the ex-Mufti's- proposal, the Arab
paper says. It relates that on
Nov. 27, 1947, the ex-Mufti Haj
Amin el Husseini sent to his em-
issary, Ahmed el Iman in Haifa,
the following message: , "The
Mufti requests you to contact
immediately Dr. Mordecai Eliash
and ask him to propose secret
talks between the Jewish
Agency and the Mufti prior. to
the final decision of the United
Nations G e n er a 1 Assembly.
These talks are to be conducted
without the mediation of any of
the Arab countries."
According to Al Yom, the ex-
Mufti also promised a compro-
mising attitude with a view to
bringing his proposed negotia-
tions to a successful conclusion.
-air The negotiations were to be
conducted at the Mufti's resi-
- deuce 'in Lebanon. In making
his proposal, the ex-Mufti re-
quested a reply from the Jewish
Agency within 24 hours.

United Nations headquarters re-
ceived a report from the UN
armistice commission in Pales-
tine that the airplane incident
on the Lebanese-Israel border
is being settled through the
Lebanese-Israel mixed armistice
commission.
The report said that the
Lebanese government complain-
ed to the UN representative in
Palestine that several passen-
gers on a Lebanese airliner had
been struck by bullets from an
Israel fighter plane. Israel dis-
claimed responsibility for the
incident.
Private reports from Lebanon
said two of the 28 passengers
aboard the Lebanese airliner
were killed and seven wounded.
A report from Tel Aviv quoted
official sources as saying that
warning shots from an Israel
fighter plane may have hit the
Lebanese passenger plane when
it flew over Israel territory
without permission.
In Tel Aviv, a military spokes-
man categorically denied
charges voiced in the Jordan
Parliament that aerial raids are
being made by Israel over Jor-
dan villages in the Hebron dis-
trict. Syrian authorities admit-
ted their forces had violated
the Israel-Syrian armistice
agreement when Syrian troops,
firing at Israelis north of the
Eta Gev settlement, recently
killed two Jewish settlers.

LONDON, (JTA--The Inter-

conference here, adopted a res-
olution calling for the estab-

The resolution was adopted
following a paper read at the
conference by Mrs. Caroline K.

Bar, who urged that the Bar
Association press for a UN High
Commissioner for Human
Rights" who would work for the

Jewish Agency executive in Jer-
usalem. The meeting unanimous-
ly rejected the idea of entering
into any talks with the ex-Mufti
and emphasized its readiness to
negotiate with any Arab leader
except the ex-Mufti, who not
only provoked bloodshed against
Jews in Palestine but also aided
Hitler in his mass annihilation
of Jews.
The reply of the Jewish

Ehrenburg 'Explains'
Russian Suppression
Of Jewish Writers

LONDON (JTA)—Claiming that
he has no information about the
group of internationally-known
Yiddish writers who suddenly
"disappeared" in Moscow, Ilya
Ehrenburg, Soviet novelist who
is • himself a Jew, told a press
conference here that Jewish au-
thors are being suppressed in
Russia, but not as Jews.
"Only Jewish cosmopolitanism
is suppressed," he declared, ad-
mitting at the same time that
some of the articles in the
Soviet press attacking "cosmo-
politanism" were "stupid and
idiotic." Among the Yiddish
writers who "disappeared" in
Moscow after the attack on
"Jewish cosmopolitanism" was
started are Itzik Feffer, who dur-
ing World War II was sent by
the Soviet Government to the
United States to bring greeting's
from the Jews in the USSR to
American Jewery.
Ehrenburg, who "distinguish-
ed" himself by publicly insulting
the first Israel Ambassador to
Moscow,- Golda Myerson, at a re-
ception given by the Soviet Com-
missariat for FISreign Affairs,
told the press that Israelis are
"poor little capitalists, who live
on a few dollars which the
greater capitalist Jews in Amer-
ica send them so that they may
live in a little comfort."
