NEW YORK, (JTA) — A fight
for the continued designation of
Jews as a religious group rather
than as a race was urged here
at a luncheon meeting of the
board of directors of the Jewish
Statistical Bureau by Albert M.
Greenfield, president of the bu-
reau.
Greenfield revealed that "pow-
erful quarters have tried to im-
pose the racial status on Jews in
the national census with attend-
ant information on occupation
and financial position." He add-
ed that such data would be mis-
used by hostile quarters to exag-
gerate the economic position of
the Jews.
He said that a proposal had
been made to draw a line of de-
marcation in the religious census
which is held in the seventh year
of every decade between Jews
who are affiliated with congre-
gations and those who are not.
