operator pondered deeply

and t h e n, his countenance
brightening, asked if he might
put a query to the court . . .
"Mr. Judge," he said. "You know
your business. I know my busi-
ness. You ask me how many
states is in a Union. I ask you,
how many bananas in a bunch?"

FOLLOWING PRESS confer-
ence held recently at Variety
Club for Victor Reuther, just re-
turned from Israel, Boris Joffe,
director of Jewish Community
Council, congratulated Council-
woman Mary Beck on her an-
nounced intentions to take a
husband . . . by expressing it in
such a way that the congrats
were really for the felloW who
will become her hubby . . . Mary
then thanked Boris for being
such a gentleman.

FOLKS GETTING tired of al-
ways being asked to contribute
for somebody's wedding present
or something- or other, will do
well to take a tip from the Gift
Fund of the gang of the Jewish
Welfare Federation . . . Every-
body from executive director
Isidore Sobeloff down to the low-
liest office worker gives to the
fund once a month . . . and
that's all . . . From this, all
gifts and other expenses are
taken care of by the committee
. . . which is made up of Irene
Bernstein, president, Ida Levine
and Charlotte Klausner.

TENTH ANNIVERSARY of
founding of Daniel Frisch Chap-
ter, ZOD, will be celebrated by
dance, June 3, at. Northwest
Hebrew Congregation . . . with
proceeds going to Jewish Na-
tional Fund.

DAVID KATZ, bossman of
Hotels Fort Wayne and Royal
Palms, was on Robert Q. -Lewis'
T-V show in New York, "The
Show Goes On" . . . looking for
talent to open in the fall at the
Burgundy Room . . . Interviewed
by Lewis, Dave said he was a
happy man . . "I have a beau- .
tiful wife, a lovely son, and
business in Detroit is terrific"
Lewis wanted to know what was
so terrific about it . . . "Well,
it's so good that we're already
taking reservations for the
World Series!" answered Dave.
. .. "That isn't the way I heard
it," said Lewis. "The series, this
year, is going to be between the
Yankees and the Dodgers!" . .
Dave, staunch Tiger rooter that
he is, offered to bet him one of
his hotels that Detroit cops the
pennant . and Lewis replied
that he was sorry but he just
happened to be out of hotels at
the time, so was unable to bet
him . . Dave, by the way,
watched an act that got such
terrific audience response that
he'll give her a spot this fall, in
the Burgundy Room.

COUPLE OF FOLKS living on
Taylor Ave. join others in tell-
ing us of their decision against
moving . . . They have removed
the "For Sale" sign from the
front of their house . . . and, in
its stead, have put in the win-
dow a "Not For Sale" sign sup-
plied by the Internal Relations
Committee of the Jewish Com-
munity Council . . . The back
of these are pamphlets that
read: "Neighbor, where are you
running to? Why not wait until
you meet your neighbor before
you judge him? Are you being
panicked by some unscrupulous
real estate dealers into leaving
a good home neighborhood for
another of very doubtful value
and probably overpriced? Are
you going to sacrifice your life
savings because of a lot of un-
founded rumors by men who will
profit by it? Think hard first!
Then, if you must, sell, but re-
member: Nobody wants to be
forced into a ghetto. Don't do
anything foolish! The old
neighborhood where you raised
your children and made your
friends is still the best located
in our city."

but nobody paid the slightest
attention . . . Finally he yelled,
"Gangway, watch out for the

him pass . . . although Ivan
