Common Source Found
In Jewish, Christian
Israel is witnessing the drama Liturgical Music Hunt
of a land settlement program

that in many ways parallels
the phenomenal settlement of
the American West made possi-
ble by the Homestead Act of
the last century, Louis Berry,
chairman of the pre-campaign
cabinet of the Allied Jewish
Campaign, said in explaining
how campaign funds are used
in Israel.
The most important aspect of
this plan, he said, was that it
provided an opportunity for
newcomers to settle on the land
without any previous agricul-
tural training. As a result,
many new immigrants have
been spared months of waiting
in the immigrant camps.
The continued successful set-
tlement of large numbers of
immigrants will depend, Berry
said, on what Detroiters and
Jews in other communities con-
tribute to their local 1950 cam-
paigns.
When a total of between 80
and 100 families have been en-
rolled for settlement, Berry ex-
plained, they are moved out of
the camps to the site of their
new village.
In addition to receiving a
monetary allowance from the
United Palestine Appeal agen-
cies, each family is alloted up
to one-half an acre (1-dunam).
The family is also given a cow,

The common source of Jewish
and Christian liturgical music in
the ancient Jewish • Temple in
Jerusalem, has been substantiat-
ed by Eric Werner, musicologist,
co m p o ser
teacher.
Hebrew Union
College - Jewish
Institute of Re-
ligion announces
that Dr. Werner,
after careful
analysis of syn-
agogue and
church musi
and liturgy, and
after exhaustive Eric Werner
investigations of several Europ-
pean and Middle East sources,
has established and documented
the common origin of the music
and liturgy, which has long been
the contention of the Roman
Catholic Church. Dr. Werner is
professor of Jewish Music at the
HUC-JIR and chairman of the
executive committee of the He-
brew Union School of Sacred
MUsic in New York.
In recognition of Dr. Werner's
original research in this field,
Msgr. Prince Rampolla, Papal
Secretary, has invited Dr. Wer-
ner to deliver an address on
"The Interdependence of Syna-.
gogue, Byzantine and Gregorian
Chant" before the International
Congress of Catholic Music at
the Pontifical Institute of Sac-
red Music in Rome at a special
Holy Year convocation begin-
ning May 25.

Israel Citrus Industry

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Israel's
of the

try — has deteriorated to a
point where it faces a 60 per
cent drop in the planting of
groves as compared with ten
years ago, it was revealed at

citrus industry—one

Farmers Federation.
Itzhak Rokach, one of the
leading executives of the
Federation, r p or t e d that
while 300,000 dunams (75,000
acres) of land were planted in
citrus groves a decade ago,
only 130,000 dunams are
planted today. He also re-
vealed that only 4,500,000
cases of citrus fruits were ex-
ported from Israel this year
as compared with 15,000;00
cases shipped ten years ago.
