Jewish National Fund
'Hit Leivick Propaganda
Plans 50th Anniversary For Yiddish in Israel

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—An impor-
tant meeting arranged by the
Jewish National Fund and at-
tended by Zionist leaders from
the United States now in Israel
took place in Jerusalem for the
purpose of discussing the cele-
brations scheduled to be held in
the U. S. in October in honor
of the J.N.F.'s 50th anniversary,
it was reported by Mendel Fish-
er, executive director of the Jew-
ish National Fund of America.
Fisher expressed great satis-
faction with the decision taken
by the recently-concluded sess-
ion of the Zionist Actions Corn- -
rnittee calling for the continua-
tion of JNF activities within its
present framework. The JNF's
receipts in the U. S. last year
exceeded $30,000,000; subsidiary
collections netted $3,000,000.

TEL AVIV — (JTA)
-Lei-
vick, American Yiddish poet,
was sharply attacked at a meet-
ing of the _Hebrew P.E.N. Club
for his "propaganda in favor
of Yiddish in Israel." Speaking
against the poet were leading
Israel authors and writers,
eluding. David Shimonovich and
Yaacov Cohen.
The Israelis maintained that
Hebrew is the only language
which can cement "solid con-
nections with the dispersed
communities" while Yiddish is
"dying a natural death, par-
ticularly in the U.S., where the
present Jewish generation
speaks only English." Speakers
pointed out that the visiting
poet's grandson does not speak
Yiddish.
