Impressive ceremonies marked

Jewish War Veterans, under the
direction of Philip Cantor, state
JWV commander, as opening fea-

The Israel colors were presented
by a group of Detroiters who
fought for the Jewish state dur-

aggressor Arab nations. Jules
Doneson directed the Israel vet-

Mr. Shevitz with a Machal Is-

The Central High School
Band, under the direction of Ben
Silverstein, played the national

The audience remained stand-

had given towards Israel's up-

assistance can be looked upon
with pride. He concluded by
saying: "I salute the republic

satisfaction that I say to you:

In a Yiddish address, the pres-
ident of the Jewish Community
Council, Dr. Shmarya Kleinman,
extended greetings to the Jew-
ish state and to the supporters
of Israel. Declaring that the
creation of the Jewish state has
"added tremendously to t h e
Jewish spirit and norale," he
joined in echoing the appeal for
unstinted support for the Allied
Jewish Campaign.
In the principal address of
the afternoon by a Jewish lead-
er Rabbi Jacob E. Segal of
Northwest Hebrew Congregation
reviewed Israel's accomplish-
ments during the past two years
and called for work and sacri-
fice to assure success for the
state's builders.
Describing the great achieve-
ment of bringing 400,000 new
settlers into Israel, Rabbi Segal
pointed out that all is not glor-
ious, that there are renewed
threats to Israel by the Arabs,
that the people are subjected
to austerity and rationing, that
there is an economic struggle,
that there are political and re-
ligious problems to overcome.
"These problems," he assert-
ed, "are more pleasant to bear
than the tyranny and degrad-
ation to which the Jewish sur-
vivors from Nazism were sub-
jected in Europe." He empha-
sized the need for assuring the
success of the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
In his address, Governor Will-
ia,ms, saluting the "friends of Is-
rael," said: "I bring most heart-
ily the official greetings of the
state of Michigan and my own
most cordial and most friendly
greetings." Referring to his visit
