of modern and classical Jewish

"Israel Reborn," a cantata by
A. W. Binder, celebrating the in-
dependence of Israel. Soloists
will be Norman Atkins, noted
New York baritone; Minnie
Lakritz, soprano, and Harry
Kobel, tenor.
Another first performance will
be the Israel folk song "Mi
Anachnu," arranged by Istvan
Szelenyi of Budapest. Other sel-
ections will be "Havdalah," by
Zalvel Zilberg and Leo Low's
Yiddish cantata "The Trees' New
Year." The soloist in both will
be Marguerite Kozenn. Julius
Chaj es, noted composer and
pianist, is , the conductor of Hal-
evy. Betty Kowalsky is accom-
panist.

Temple Israel Observes
Lag b'Omer; Announce
Commencement Service

Lag b'Omer, the "Festival of
the Scholars," will be observed
by Temple Israel at Sabbath eve
services Friday, May 5, at 8:30
in the Lecture Hall of the De-
troit Institute of Arts. -
Rabbi Leon Fram will lecture
on Rabbi Akiba, the hero of the
Festival. At this service, Robert
Stein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sol I.
Stein, will celebrate his Bar
Mitzvah.,
Rabbi Fram also announces
that the commencement service
of Temple Israel High School will
take place Friday night, May 12,
when 25 students will receive
diplomas.
Confirmation will take place
on the eve of Shevuot, Sunday
night, May 21. A class of 51 will
receive the conformation bless-
lug.

Israel, Youth Themes

Israel Independence Day and
Jewish youth, a two-fold theme,
will highlight the last - Oneg
Shabbat of this season of the
Northwest Sisterhood, at the
home of Mrs. Michael Galsky,
18200 Woodingham, Saturday,
April 29, at 2:30 p.m., announces
the chairman, Mrs. Jacob E.
Segal.
The topic will be presented
by a "Sabra"—a, native of Israel
—Esther Names, who is visiting
this country. The following
daughters of Sisterhood mem-
bers also will participate.: Ann-
ette Festenstein, the opening
prayer; Dorothy Kleinstein, cur-
rent Jewish events, and Gail
Cobper, closing poem.
Cantor Nicholas Fenakel will
be the vocal soloist and will
lead community singing.

Yeshiva Ladies Hear
NY Rabbi at Donor

The Ladies Auxiliary of Yeshi-
vath Chachmey Lublin will hold
its eighth annual donor lunch
at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at
Zack's.
Rabbi Israel Abraham Stein
of New York, a graduate of Yes-
hivath Chachmey Lublin in Po-
land will be guest speaker. Mu-
sical selections will be provided
by Cantor Nicholas Fenakel of
the Northwest Hebrew Cong.
Mrs. I. Levin, chairman of the
luncheon, is assisted by Mrs.
Rose Rubin and Mrs. Lena Wein-
berg, co-chairmen.

Cong. Shaarey Zedek, Harry M.
Shulman is being honored in
specially drawn resolutions ex-
pressing the synagogue's appre-
ciation Vor his untiring zeal in
advancing its educational and
religious programs.
By unanimous action, the
synagogue's membership, at its
annual meeting, voted to honor
Shulman. Harry Cohen, former
Shaarey Zedek president, moved
the resolution of thanks.

Sisters of Zion Mizrachi will
hold a mother and daughter
dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday, May
4, at the Bel-Aire.
Rabbi Moses Lehrman will be
the principal speaker.
The musical portion of the
program will be arranged by
Mickey. Wolfe. Mildred Gutter-
man's dramatic school will pre-
sent several sketches.
Mrs. Morris Cooper is chair-

A Lebanese Sew from Aleppo
was arrested in Beirut on
charges of smuggling Jews from
Lebanon to Israel, the Near East
Arabic Radio reported.
