WASHINGTON — Even Jewish
Republicans were shocked re-
cently when Sen. Joseph R.
McCarthy, R.-Wis., inserted in
the Congressional Record a copy
of the anti-Semitic newsletter.
"Closer-Ups of The World's
Trends" by Upton Close.
Close attempts inferential-
ly to link Jews with Commu-
nism. This one reports. "Here's
what happened: Young men
with new ideas came into the
State Department and other de-
partments . . . Felix Frankfur-
ter, from Vienna, taught them
guile."
Close's bigoted views are well
known. Many pages of .the Anti-
Defamation League's annual re-
port are devoted to his activi-;
ties. Not only does Close express
pro-German sentiments but he
goes to great lengths on the Jew-
ish "question." In a speech at
Milwaukee, Close said, "Thirty
million Americans of German
descent should arise united and
fight the present administra-
tion and the Bnai Brith ."
HELP Gets Thompson
Dorothy Thompson has been
named to the executive commit-
tee of HELP (Holyland Emer-
gency Liaison Program), an
American pro-Arab propaganda
agency.
Zionists were indignant re-
cently when' HELP aided Yusif
El Bandak, an Arab propagan-
dist with publicity. El Bandak,
it was reported, was linked with
Haj Amin El Husseini, ex-Mufti
of Jerusalem. Haj Amin joined
the Nazis and broadcast from
Berlin for Hitler during the
war. He said, ". .. the Germans
know how to get rid of the Jews"
and for that reason he pledged
the Arab world to Nazi ideals.
"A:...bs. Arise as one may.,'' he
exli.ortz,d, Kiil the Jews wher-
ever youfind them." .
The HELP organization in-
cludes "do-gooders" who lend
their names without knowing
the anti-Israel leanings of
HELPS directors, pro-Arab writ-
ers and officials of the Ameri-
can Council for Judaism. A
typical member of its executive
committee, Millar Burrows, re-
cently wrote a book, "Palestine
Is Our Business." It tells Chris-
tian Americans they have done
wrong to tolerate Zionism be-
cause "Zionism is basically and
tragically wrong."
