Ask Congressional
Review of -U.S.
Policy in Germany
A "full review" by Congress
and a Presidential Commission
of the execution of American
policy in Germany was called
for by a 17-member Coordinat-
ing Council on German Democ-
racy.
As evidence of the failure of
American policy to achive dem-
ocratization in Germany, t h e
statement cited "the re-emer-
g e n c e of extreme nationalist
political groups; the return of
many former active Nazis and
other extreme nationalists to im-
portant administrative and eco-
nomic positions, and the propo-
sals for the creation of a Ger-
many army."
The Council commended U.S.
High Commissioner John J. Mc-
Cloy for his statement of policy
at Stuttgart in February. It said
it hoped this marked the "end
of present trends" toward Ger-
man militarism and supra-na-
tionalism.
Composed of 15 fifteen organ-
izations and two organization
officials who acted individually,
the Council reached its conclu-
sions at a series of conferences
held during the summer and
fall of 1949. Among the Council
members are: t h e American
Jewish Committee, the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress, the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, the -.Jewish Labor Com-
mittee, the Jewish War Veterans
of the United States, the Na-
tional Commu-nity Relations Ad-
visory Council and the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions.
