Brandeis President,
Trustee to Address
Detroiters At Dinner

The story of Brandeis Univer-
sity in Waltham, Mass., the na-
tion's first co-educational non-
sectarian institution established
under Jewish sponsorship a little
more than a year ago, will be
outlined to a group of Detroit
community leaders next Tuesday
at 6:30 p.m. when George Alpert,
chairman of the
Brandeis - board
of trustees, and
Dr. Abram L.
Sachar, pr es i-
dent of the Uni-
versity, will
speak at a meet-
ing at the Book
Cadillac Hotel.

meeting is Leo-
nard Simons.
Geo. Alpert ,
Dr. Sachar and Alpert are on
a nation-wide tour in behalf of
the newly-founded institution.
Brandeis, which launched its
second academic year this fall
when more than 150 entering
freshmen, from 22 states a n d
Canada, joined last year's pilot
class of 100, has doubled its stu-
dent body and its faculty this
year.

annual donor event, in the main
auditorium of the Masonic Tem-
ple at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29.
Announcement also is made
that Miklos Gafni, who has been
proclaimed as possessing "the
voice of his generation," will be
the guest soloist.
Gafni has appe ar e d on
the concert stage, sang over the
radio and appeared in the
movies. He has been acclaimed
in major cities throughout the
world. The •movie "A Voice is
Born," in which he was featured
in his own life story, received
the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences 1948 Award of
Merit. He also appears on tele-
vision and his recordings are
among the more popular sellers.
All' proceeds of this year's
fund-raising event will be used
for further redemption of land
in Israel to become the inalien-
able property of the Jewish
people.
Mrs. A r th ur Selnian is pro-
gram chairman.
The final rally • and • report
meeting for the donor event will
be a dessert luncheon at 12:30
p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1'7, at Beth
Shmuel Synagogue, at which
Rabbi Moses Lehrman will speak.

this week include $300 from Mrs.
S. Raimi; $250 each from Mrs.
Charles Milan, Mrs. Albert Posen;
$150•each from the Young Wom-
en's Bicur Cholem Organization
and the Jewish Women's Euro-
pean Welfare Organization, and
$100 each from the Stollman
Family; Mrs. Louis Stollman, Dr.
Ralph Altman, Central Heating
Co., the Kosher Butchers' Asso-
ciation, Mlaver Emgegend Vet-
ein, Mrs. Jules Kraft and MrS.
Oscar Kees.

MONTEVIDEO, (JTA)—A Uru-
guay - Palestine Bank will be

opened here Feb. 15. The Gov-
ernment of Uruguay ha,s author-
ized a -group of Jewish business-
men to sell shares of the bank
to the extent , oif 1,500,000 pesos.
