State Dept. Condemns
Treatment of Jacobson

WASHINGTON, (JTA) - T h e
State Department issued a strong
statement condemning H u n -
gary's treatment of Israel Jacob-
son,, director of the Joint Distri-
bution Ciommittee in Budapest.
"The treatment of Mr. Jacob-
son by the Hungarian police au-
thorities, which has been report-
ed in the press and confirmed
by official reports to the De-
partment, again demonstrates
the notorious' police state meth-
ods which are practiced in Hun-
gary and it is further evidence
of the Hungarian Government's
violation of elemental human
rights," the statement declared.

Javits Warns Against
Arms Shipment to Arabs

WASHINTON, (JTA) - Rep.
Jacob K. Javits, of New York,
asked Secretary of State Dean
Acheson for "the earliest pos-
sible expression" on U. S. policy
on the shipment of arms .by
Britain to the Arab states. Mr.
Javits said he investigated the
arms situation during his recent
trip to Israel and Europe and
found a -"dangerous situation
about the eventuality of a re-
newal of the Arab-Israeli war."

Thirty Lebanese Jewish
Families Go To Israel

AVIV, (JTA)-The Leba,
nese Government has permitted
30 Jewish families in Lebanon to
leave for Israel, it was reported
by the Arab News Agency,.
A group of 277 Arab women
and children crossed the Leba-
nese border Dec.' 28 • to be re-
united with their families in Is-
rael. An official announcement
said that henceforth all trans-
fers of Arab refugees from Le-
banon to Israel will` take place
on Tuesdays, which have been
designated "Repatriation Days:"

Immigrants in Israel
Include 500 Physicians


JERUSALEM (JTA) - More
than 500 physicians entered Is-
rael since the Jewish state was
proclaimed, the Jewish Agency
revealed here. Although a num-
ber of the immigrant phy-
sicians are still living in recep-
tion camps, most of them have
been resettled either by the
Agency or privately.
The Jewish Agency said it
has expended to date 40,000
pounds for initial •-equipm,ent
for the -fahysicians while ap-
proximately 10,000 pounda were
loaned to t h e doctor-immi-
grants to help pay their rentals.
In cooperation with Histadrut,
the Agency has spent 15,000
pounds for housing' construc-
tion for the newly - arrived
physici a ns.

and her daughters in Chicago at news of Israel Jacobson's re-
lease by Reds in Hungary. The director of the Ameritan Joint
Distribution committee in Hungary was held 12 days, said he
was questioned repeatedly for spells of 20 hours. Daughters
of Jacobson and his 34-year-old wife are MARGO, 8, and
HELEN, 6.
