Bnai Brith Cites Jack Benny
For 'Good Works Quietly Done'

Cafe Strike Reported
To Protest Meat Ration

TEL AVIV—(ISI)—Meat cou-
pons for restaurant patrons will
be introduced in January, Dov.
Joseph, Minister of Supply and
Rationing told the economic
committee of the Knesset last
week. Tourists will get coupons
for 10 meat meals per fortnight.
Joseph revealed that large
consignments of coffee are en
route to Israel. The possibility
of adding roasted barley to cof-
fee beans was being studied.
JTA reported that cafes and
restaurants staged a 24-hour
strike throughout the country, in
protest against the introduction
of meat coupons.
The Ministry said the strike
was not justified and would not
influence its action.
All rail traffic in Israel was
at a standstill in a demand for
improved working conditions
and higher wages for skilled and
unskilled men.

Comedian Jack Benny is shown with his Bnai Brith serv-
ice citation which was presented to him Dec. 4 on a nation-
ide broadcast honoring the 106th anniversary of the fra-
ernal and service organization. Frank Goldman of Lowell,
Mass., national Bnai Brith president, made the presentation
nd cited Benny as "not only the master showman and de-
lightful radio personality who has become an institution on
he American scene . . . but a fine human being who is tire-
essly engaged in good works quietly done." He listed Benny's
ork as a leader in the motion picture division of the United
ewish Appeal and as a worker for the American Red Cross,
arch of Dimes and Community Chest. Benny was a long-
ime member of the Waukegan, Ill., Bnai Brith Lodge, later
ransferring to the Beverly Hills Lodge.
