Psycoiogical Survey Shows Public
Respects Catholic Stand Against Evil,
By DR. HENRY C. LINK
There are more than twice as
many Protestants as there are
Catholics in the United States.
Yet, • when asked which church
was taking the strongest stand
against evil almost as many peet
pie said the Catholic Church as
said the Protestant Church.
This wa.s ascertained in a
Psychological Barometer survey
of 5.000 adult men and women
during August. Four hundred
and thirty-four interviewers. un-
der the direction of 94 psycholo-
gists associated With the Psy-
chological Corporation, made
these interviews. All were made
in the home, and M 127 cities
and towns from coast to coast.
The questions asked were:
"Would- you mind telling me
your religious background?"
"Which do you think is tale.
ing the strongest stand for good
and against evil in the world
today: the Catholic Church, the
Protestant Church or the Jewish
Church?"
Urban dwellerS in all walks of
life and at all income • levels
were interviewed. According • to
their religious background, they
divided percentages as follows:
Protestant, 61; Catholic, • 27;
Jewish, 7; None, 3; Miscellane-
ous 2. It should be noted that
people were not asked what
church they belonged to, but
only what was their religious
background.
Their answers to the question
on which was taking the strong-
est stand for good and against
evil were: 34%, uncertain, 26%,
Protestant Church, 21%, Catho-
lic Church, 2%, Jewish Church,
8%, none of the churches, 6%,
all churches. Those of Catholic
.background were most certain
that the Catholic Church was
taking the strongest stand, the
Protestants were much less cer-
tain, the Jews were least cer-
tain.
By far the most frequent rea-
son given by those naming the
Catholic Church was the strong
stand taken against Comm&
nism, not only in the United
States but throughout the world.

sic Custodian of Holy Places.
Pointing out that 80 percent
of church property requisitioned
by the Jewish army during the
hostilities has already been re-
stored to the churches and 20
percent will be released soon, the
Israel official said: ta'he state-
ment by Brother Raphael Quinn

with the defamation campaign
emanating the past year from
Arab and Catholic sources in the
Old City for purposes of poison-
ing the good relations between
the Israel Government and the

country.
Desecration Condemned
"The , government l and the
people of Israel have repeatedly
condemned those isolated acts
of desecration of church prop-
erty as committed by small
groups of irresponsible persons
in the early period following the
establishment of the state, and
mostly committed in the heat Of
fighting and prior to effective
control over those institutions
in the war-ridden areas.
"Monsignor Thomas MacMa-
hon in March wrote to the Sec-
retary-General of the United
Nations expressing satisfaction
with the Israel Government's
genuine desire• to repair any
damage• done and to maintain
proper relations with the reli-
gious institutionsand their boun-
daries. After his second visit
here two months ago, Monsignor
MacMahon reiterated his satis-
faction with the progressive sta-
bilization of those relations."
Israel's Record Good
Declaring that Israel consist-
ently advocated that the Holy
Places be safeguarded by an in-
ternational authority and pledg-
ed the fullest cooperation in the
implementation of such an
agreement, the spokesman said:
"After one year of independ-
ence, Israel's record of treat-
ment of its Christian communi-
ties will stand comparison with.
the 30 years of independence of
the Arab states."

tary authorities have ' decided
against releaiing the anti-Nazi
film "Ntierenberg—Its Lesson for
Today" for exhibition in Amer-
lean theatres. The movie, pro-
duced by the U. S. Army to tell
the public the incriminating
story of the crimes committed
by the Nazis against humanity, is
considered a powerful indictment
against anti-Semitism.
The film was irrefutably docu-
mented by captured Nazi films
of the organized mass murder
of Jews. The official explanation
offered by the Army for suppres-
sion of the documentary is that
it is outdated, technically imper-
feet and contAirts too much hor-
or. However, prominent quarters
in Washington are charging that
the Army fears criticism of the
failure of its denazification pro-
gram and is afraid of stirring up
public opinion in view of new
occupation policies which pro-
vide for the return of Nazis to
respectability.
Under-Secretary of the Army
Tracy Voorhies has said that a
public Showing would be "incon-
sistent" with the Army's occu-
patian program.. It has been in-
dicated also, from sources with-
in the government, that re-
newed public resentment of Na-
zism might interfere with Army
and State Department plans for
the new West German State.
