Sticky Palms

An American who recently returned here from an extended
trip to Israel, in his analysis of conditions in the new state, laid
particular emphasis of the fact that the governinent of Israel is
free of corruption . . . This may not mean much td the average
American . . . However, it is a unique phenomenon in the Middle
East, where all states are known for their corruption . . Presi-
dents, Prime Ministers and Cabinet members in the Arab states
have "sticky palms" . . . They can almost invariably be had for a
price . . . Whenever a political upheaval takes place in one of
those countries the first question invariably asked is who—mean-
ing whose money—is behind it.
The Israel Premier Ben Gurion receives a salary of 75 pounds
a month . . With tax deductions of 35 pounds a month he has
left only 40 pounds or $420.00 monthly . . . He lives in the same
simple abode, as he did prior to his premiership . . . When on one
of the Jewish holidays he entertained several guests at dinner,

dishes . . . Ben Gurion and other Mapai leaders have an enviable
