NEW YORK, (JTA) — Local
Jewish communities in the Unit-
ed States and Canada have
raised, or have been raising—
since 1944—a minimum total of
$150,000,000 for the construction
of hOspitals, community centers,
homes for the aged, convalescent
facilities a n d congregational
buildings, according to a survey
released by the Council of Jew-
ish Federations and Welfare
Funds.
The survey establishes that a
top priority concern of Jewish
communities is the mapping of
programs and the providing of
funds to build new community
buildings and replace outmoded
ones, as well as to plan for corn-
mtmity construction which will
serve new and expanded needs.
"Communities are rapidly mov-
ing out of the planning stage
and are going ahead with their
actual construction," the Coun-
cil reports on the basis of its
survey.
Most of the building fund
canipaigns were begun in 1945,
the report points out, but were
inactive during the two follow-
ing years.

King of the Rumba and one of the
introducers of the "Mambo"

Many letters congratulate us on
our exhibitions done at the differ-
ent nite spots, which brings us to
a topic that we have been wont-
ing to write about for a long time
when given the opportunity, and
to give credit to the man in whose
nite club the first dance exhibition
was done. This man is Sol Boesky
of Boesky's Sid's Cafe on E. War-
ren. For the past three years he
has set aside Tuesday night as
exhibition night with Bobby Rod-
riguez and His Rumba Band and
the first show was done by Chris-
topher Smith and Sherry Dresden.
Today, Christopher Smith and his
dancers appear every Tuesday
night in exhibitions of all types of
ballroom dancing.
This has done a lot to ferment
the interest in the Latin dances,
especially the Rumba, and since
then Detroit has become Rumba
conscious. All the other night
clubs followed the idea and have
also put aside one night a week
for the Rumba devotees. It has
grown so much that we predict
that in the very near future all
the nite spots in town will feature
name bonds from New York.
In the meantime let us practice
up on our Rumba and other Latin
dances at the studio of the one
who has pioneered these dances in
Detroit and is considered one of
the outstanding exponents in the
country today with a staff of ex-
perts second to none.
