Anti-Israel Statement°
Branded 'Ignorance'
Zionist circles expressed
amazement over the statement
made in Aley, Lebanon, this week
by former Mayor George W.
Welsh of Grand Rapids that
Jewish refugees who arrived in
Palestine created the Arab refu-
gee problem.
Welsh's statement is branded
as sheer ignorance, stemming
from a total lack of knowledge
upon the sympathy of which
Lebanese propagandists played
in order to create anti-Israeli
sentiments.
It is pointed out that-
1. Arabs left Israel in panic
when they were instigated by
the Mufti and his cohorts to
leave the country — with the
promise that upon their return
they would be able to loot Jew-
ish property.

2. Jews pleaded with Arabs to
remain in Israel. Only 70,000 re-
mained, but since then their
number has increased to 170,000.
3. Originally, the claim was
that .300,000 Arabs had left Is-
rael. Anti-Israelis then began to
boost the total to 400,000, 500,-
000', then 800.000 — and now
Welsh, in his naivete, boosts
the total to 1,000,000. That, Zion-
ists say, is sheer ignorance.
4. The entire issue is in the
hands of the United Nations and
a solution now is being worked
out. For a man totally unin-
formed to create enmity against
Israel is a shocking example of
a lack of fair play, some Zionists
say.
The hope is expressed that
Welsh and his associates on the
tour will visit Israel and get a
true view of the existing situa-
tion.

Shomrim Are Warned
Against Insulting Beigin
BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — Ten
members of the Hashomer Hat-
zair who were arrested for dis-
tributing leaflets calling the Ir-
gunists "fascist murderers" were
released.
Police authorities stated that
they have warned members of
the Hashomer Hatzair who had
been conducting a propaganda
campaign against Menahem Bei-
gin, former Irgun leader, since
his arrival in Argentina, that
they would not tolerate encite-
ment to violence against mem-
bers of a parliament of a coun-•
try which maintains friendly re-
lations with Argentina.
"El Estado Judio," organ of
the General Zionists, appeared
with an article protesting tl4e
Hashomer Hatzair action. The
article states that "internal Jew-
ish conflicts need not be aired
on the streets of Buenos Aires."
Emphasizing that the General
Zionists do not agree with the
political line and methods of the
Herut Party in Israel, of which
Beigin is a leader, the article
says that the distribution of in-
sulting anti-Beigin leaflets by
the Hashomer Hatzair was "a
cruel injustice."
More than 1,000 persons at-
tended a reception given for Mr.
Beigin by the Macabbi, the larg-
est Jewish sports club here.
Principal speaker at the recep-
tion was Dr. Moises Goldman,
president of the Macabbi or-
ganiption.

Remnants of Synagogue
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Rem-
nants of an ancient synagogue
bearing Samaritan inscriptions
have been uncovered by archae-
ologists digging in the _village of
Salyith, which overlooks the Ay-
alon Valley.
Dr. Eliezer Sukenik, Israel's
leading achaeologist, who is di-
recting the excavations, thinks
he has discovered the site of a
town whose name is not known
but which dates back to the era
of King Solomon. The excava-
tions are financed by a special
fund donated by Louis M. Rab-
inovitz of New York.

Iraq Demands Haifa
Be International Port
LONDON, (JTA)—Iraq has de-
manded that Haifa be declared
an international port by the
Israeli Government rather than
a free port as a condition for
the reopening of the oil pipeline
from Kirkuk to Haifa, the Man-
chester Guardian reports.
Other conditions laid down by
Iraqi Premier Gen. Nurial Said
included the return of Western
Galilee to the status of Arab
territory, as outlined in the
Bernadotte report.
