The Israelis withdrew a re-
quest for a roll call vote on the
is s u e, when the Australian
representative charged that the
request was made to apply pres-
sure was being exerted in this

spokesmah retorted that pres-
sure was being exterted in this
instance but not by Israel. It
has been learned here that Bri-
tain has been lobbying against
recognition of the Jewish em-

that Israel will sign the new

GENEVA (JTA) — An Israeli
resolution to extend Interna-
tional Red Cross recognition to
the emblem of the Red Mogen
Dovid was defeated at the Red
Cross conference here which is
redrafting the Geneva Conven-
tion for the protection of civil-
ians in wartime. The vote was
22-21, with seven abstentions.
Red Cross president Dr. Paul
Ruegger and the Swiss and Sy-
rian delegates argued against
recognition,. while the French,
Argentine and Israeli represen-
tatives favored the mbtion. The
Israeli representative pointed. to
the precedent set in 1929 when
the Red _Cross extended recog
nition_ to the • Moslem Red Cres-.
cent and the Iranian Lion and
added that non-recognition of
the Red Mogen Dovid left its
institutions and personnel open
to being fired upon' by the
armed forces of the nations

For a Tuneful Treat

NEW YORK—The State, De-
partment is aiding in building
cultural ties between American
Jewry and the Jewish com-
munity in Israel, the National
Jewish Welfare Board reported
in announcing that two one
hour packaged programs of Jew-
ish music recorded in the United
States by the "Voice of America"
had been sent to Israel and re-
broadcast there by "Klal Israel,"
the official Israeli broadcasting
station.
Recorded during this year's
observance of Jewish Music Fes-
tival, an annual event held
under the auspices of the JWB-
sponsored National Jewish Music
Council, the two programs in-
cluded an. introductory talk In
Hebrew describing the observ-
ance of Jewish Music Festival
and citing its sponsorship by the
Jewish Music Council, accord-
ing to a report from the Coun-
cil's Israeli correspondent, Dr.
Peter Gradenwitz.
"Voice of America" recorded
programs sent to Israel in-
cluded: "Shelomo" by Bloch, as
performed by the New York
Philharmonic Orchestra, with
Leonard Rose as soloist and Leo-
pold Stokowski as conductor,
and "Concertino" by A. W. Bin-
der, performed by the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra under the
baton of Karl Krueger.

planning to arrange for similar
programs to be recorded by the
"Voice of America" during the
