Chief Rabbinate Rules
Karaites Are Not Jews
JERUSALEM ( MNB) —In reply
to a query from the Constanti-
nople r a b b i n a t e questioning
whether members of the Karaite
sect there could repent and be
considered members of the Jew-
ish faith, the Chief Rabbinate of
Israel has replied that because
of fundamental differences in
Jewish traditions this was not
possible. The Karaltes, also
known as "Scripturalists" be-
cause they adhere only to the
written tradition, came into be-
ing in the 8th century and lost
their influence as a result of the
activity of Saadia Gaon (ca.
900).
