Translation of Code of Maimonides:
First in Series of 15 Planned Books
From Yale University Press,
New Haven, Conn., comes a
great contribution to Jewish
literature—the first translation
of "The Code of Maimonides:
The Book of Civil Laws" (Book
• 13). This translation from the
HebreW, by Jacob J. Rabinowitz,
• an attorney, was published for
• Judaica Research at Yale Uni-
4.. versity on the Louis M. Rabin-
. owitz Foundation, as the second
volume in the Yale Judaica Se-
ries.
Recognized as the most au-
thoritative restatement of Jew-
ish Law, the Code of Malmo-
. nides was written by, the great
scholar (Moses ben Maimon),
who is referred to as second only
to Moses the Lawgiver, in the
12th century. It deals with laws
of Hiring, Borrowing and De-
positing, Creditor and Debtor,
Pleading and Inheritance.
Of major interest in con-
nection with the publication
of this volume is that it is the
intention of the Yale Univer-
sity Press to publish the en-
tire Maimonides Code. This is
the first of a , series of 14
planned volumes. Each of the
contemplated translations has
been assigned to an individual
scholar and one is being pre-
pared in collaboration of two
scholars. A 15th Volume is
planned as a critical appraisal
of the entire Code.
The present work, the Book of
Civil Laws, treats many issues,
including, among others: Bail-
ment, hirer's liability, letting of
houses, tenancy of fields, loans
and repayment, usury, oaths,

property liability for payment
of debts, enforcement proced-
ures, preparation of legal docu-
ments, disinheritance, estoppel,
etc.
By rendering the original text
into understandable English
legal terminology, Mr. Rabino-
witz has rendered a real service
to Jewish scholarship. He offers
excellent explanations of techni-
cal terms and reveals a deep
knowledge of Talmudic and
Mishnaic sources, without which
he could not have completed
such a difficult task.

Anti-Semitic Groups
Call Illinois Parley
PHILADELPHIA, (JTA)
—Plans for convening a nation-
al conference of all anti-Semitic
groups in the U. S. in Hinckley,
Ill., this month, were made
known here followi. g a week-
end parley of two ic,cal anti-
Jewish organizations—the Na-
tional Action League and the
Loyal American group. Purpose
of the national convention would
be to attempt to unite all anti-
Semitic and racist groups into a
single national body.
Last year Gerald. L. K. Smith,
notorious . pro-Fascist and anti-
Semitic figure, called a conven-
tion.,,of the "National Christian
Party" in St. Louis, but his ef-
forts at getting his par:,y listed
on state ballots in last year's
national elections failed. Simi-
larly, a conference of "pro-
American Nationalists" was call-
ed last year by Andrew B. Mc-
Allister and George E. Hornby,
with the avowed purpose of set-
ting up a "United Nationalist
Front."
